Method

  1. Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and line the bases of 2 x 450g loaf tins with baking parchment. To make the streusel topping, rub the butter into the flour, then mix in the demerara sugar and chopped pecans. Melt the chocolate either in the microwave or in a small glass bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir until smooth and remove from the heat.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and caster sugar until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the egg, beating well between each addition. Sift together the flour, baking powder and cocoa and fold in using a large metal spoon. Add the mashed banana and chocolate and mix well.
  3. Divide the mixture between the 2 tins and top each with the streusel. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool on a rack, then wrap in baking parchment or foil.

Great recipe - have made it as one single loaf in a 2lb loaf tin (just takes slightly longer in the oven), and also made it in a deep 7" tin, and then sliced into 2 layers and filled with ganache as a birthday cake - both went down a treat!

I've never bothered with the streusel topping though - as an everyday cake for tea, it doesn't need any topping as far as I'm concerned.

Made half ingredients, just one egg and added walnuts to make one 1lb loaf. Delicious. Used dark chocolate. You could almost make it without the bananas the chocolate was that good. Dense, like shop bought.

Made this today, substituted hazelnuts for the topping, the topping gives it the WOW factor(going to double the amount next time). tried the first one warm with clotted cream icecream..heaven in a bowl, can see this becoming a firm favourite

Definitely deserves its 5* rating. Used a 1lb cake tin and left it for 55 mins. Perfect. Didn't bother with the topping. Delicious.

Very tasty, rich in chocolate with a hint of banana flavour. Easy to make, beautifully looking and ... quickly gone :) Highly recommended!

Very nice and moist cake. I left off the topping. I am next time going to bake it all in one loads tin. I separated them into two tins like the recipe stated however they came out quite flat.

What a lovely cake... Didn't bother with the topping. Also didn't melt the chocolate, just chopped it up and folded it in with the mashed banana... I made the two cakes, as per instructions but think in hindsight one would also work. Will make again!

Amazing recipe, only had one loaf tin so made the rest into muffins-all of which came out delicious after 45 minutes, very light and moist. Only difficulty I had was the topping but another tbsp of flour sorted it. Will definitely be making again.

I made one loaf & 9 muffins out of this. Really nice. I also subbed 20g of flour for flax seed & it turned out fine. Didn't bother with the topping but I might put a frosting on. Possibly cream cheese.
