  • 140g lean minced beef
  • 250ml beef stock
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato purée
  • 1 large jacket potato, baked
  • small handful grated cheddar

Once cheddar was 'Cheddar', a large, hard-pressed barrel of cheese made by a particular…

  1. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Melt half the butter in a non-stick pan. Cook the onion for 3-4 mins, then increase the heat and add the mince. Fry for a further 3-4 mins until the beef has browned. Stir in the stock, Worcestershire sauce, tomato purée and some seasoning. Gently bubble for 15-20 mins until the mince is tender and the sauce has thickened.

  2. To assemble, cut the jacket potato in half lengthways and scoop the flesh into a small bowl, leaving the skin intact. Mash the potato with the remaining butter and season well. Divide the mince between the potato skins, then cover with the mash. Transfer the potatoes to a baking dish, sprinkle with cheese, then bake for 15-20 mins until golden. Serve with your favourite veg.

This Is a Great dish the only complaint I have is that you never see a shepherd herding Cows
have don't with the right meat will try it with beef and call it cottage pie on potatoes .yes I am a farmers wife

These are just in the oven & if you are not too fussy they look great! However I microwaved the potatoes and maybe this made the skins a bit soft as I managed to pierce one with the spoon, I have patched it up with some mash so here's hoping!

so glad i found this recipe. made the fillings before with different recipes, but not as tasty. however, i did add a little more of tomato puree and beef bouillon cube to make it a bit thicker and tastier. definitely a keeper. thanks!

Trebled the recipe.

I'm eating this right now. Good idea and a very tasty sauce (a splash of red wine and longer cooking of the sauce enhanced the dish). Delicious

We all loved this. Was so easy to make but looked great. Will definitely make again.

One of the family favourites and so easy to do.

I did enjoy these but really they are just cottage pie, so i dont think its worth the faff, also there wasnt enough potatoe so would suggest cooking an extra potatoe to make extra mash

Forgot to rate - 5 stars definitely!

Lovely twist on cottage / shepherd's pie, but definitely a weekend meal as it's quite time-consuming. Looks a lot more attractive on the plate than a collapsing dollop of your normal cottage pie! I can imagine this would work very well with chilli or bolognese too...

Absolutely delicious. Well worth the wait.

Loved this and so did my children! I cooked and froze double the amount of mince as well to use as a base for other meals in future

It hardly seemed worth the electricity using the oven for one potato so I used the cornish pasty recipe on this site and baked them at the same time for the freezer , the potato and pasties were both great

I've made this dish several times now, always goes down a treat! Very easy to do and so tasty :)

Fantastic recipe! Tasty, filling and easy. I also agree that it would be just as nice with leftover bolognese or chilli. Will definately be making again.

I LOVE this recipe. It is well worth it and makes a delicious meal.

will definatly make this again, proper comfort food, so much easier than peeling and mashing potatoes.

I made this for a party and they went down a treat. Didn't take much prep and looked really great with the melted cheese on top. I will definately be making these for dinner in the future!

These were brilliant, we scoffed them before heading down to the pub to watch the rugby, perfect to line the stomach! I just served them with broccoli.

The end result was very yummy. It was however really fiddly and messy to make and took a long time. I thought afterwards that I would rather have had a normal shepherds pie to show for all my efforts. Boyfriend thought they were great though so looks like I might be making them again anyway!
