Method

  1. Gently melt the chocolate in the microwave or a bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water then cool slightly.
  2. Beat together the egg yolks and Cointreau and gently mix into the melted chocolate. Whisk the egg whites to firm peaks and carefully fold them through the chocolate mixture. Spoon into 4 glasses and chill.
  3. To make the candied orange, dissolve the sugar in 2 tbsp water and boil for 2 minutes. Drop in the orange zest and cook for a couple of minutes, then remove, drain and leave to cool on baking paper. Spoon some cream on top of the mousse and top with the candied orange.

Tasty - and so fast! Recipe makes 4 good-sized servings, so could easily make a dainty dessert for 5 or 6.

Made this for a small dinner party, i made it twice beacause the first time i added 2tbsp of cointreau instead of 2 tsp, which in made the choclate mixture rather lumpy but i carried on anyway& put them in the fridge. I then made them again (2tsp this time) & it was smooth & topped it with whippped cream & used a potato peeler on the chocolate to make little curls. We all loved it sooo much we ate the lumpy ones too which were also lovely & the lumps tasted like choc drops.

Absolutely delicious, but next time would add one or two more tsps of Cointreau as it wasn't particularly orangey.

I made this for a dinner party and didn't think there was very much per serving, however, it was quite rich for a mousse so it worked out very well. Very tasty. Not convinced about the candied orange though. Will certainly be making again, it's so easy and ready prepared in the fridge for just last minute additions (i.e. cream on top) before serving!

This was disappointing as it doesnt tell you how long to chill for, mine was still runny so for new cooks it would be useful to know how long to chill. Especially bad as I had people round and it was a bit embarrasing. Bit too sweet and not much orange taste. Other recipes from this site have been fine tho.

I was disappointed with this recipe... I tried it twice and both times it didn't set properly! It tasted nice but the fact that there are raw eggs in it and it was a bit runny meant I couldn't serve it at my dinner party... Have had to find a different mousse recipe (which, incidentally, works REALLY well!). I even bought a new whisk to make this because I thought it wasn't setting because of the egg whites - so double disappointment!!
