Method

  1. Heat the oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 2. Dust the lamb shanks with flour and season. Heat a casserole and add a little butter and olive oil. Add the onions and cook until soft, then scoop out. Put in the lamb shanks and brown all over. Put the onions back in the casserole with the garlic, balsamic, wine, tomato purée, rosemary and season.
  2. Cover, put in the oven and cook for 21/2 hours until the meat is almost falling off the bone. Remove the lamb from the casserole and keep warm. Boil down the juices to thicken them if they seem too thin.
  3. Meanwhile, boil the potatoes until soft. Drain, add a knob of butter, thyme, mint, then season and crush lightly. Serve with the lamb shanks and gravy.

Really lovely! I served mine with mashed swede which seemed to work well. I put baby potatoes in with it which saoked up the flavours from the lamb and sauce. I will make it again but will probably leave out the balsamic vinegar as I found it a bit too strong. The red wine sauce a definate though!. The smells from the kitchen were glorious!

I absolutely loved this recipe! My husband and I had a romantic dinner and I cooked this recipe for the dinner. My husband is extremely fussy and had never eaten lamb shanks before. Since eating that fine meal he is now hooked! This recipe is excellent and I would highly recommend it to those looking for a superb lamb shank recipe. My husband said that it was the best thing he had ever eaten. LOL he also said that each mouthful was like drops of heaven. Thank you for sharing this recipe with us :0)

If you enjoy extremely tender lamb in a rich and sticky sauce this is perfect. I didn't bother with the addition of the flour and the sauce didn't need it. I did add a couple of bay leaves which possibly enhanced the flavour. I didn't try the potatoes but rather roasted some parsnips and sweet potatoes which complimented the dish perfectly.

Have made this twice and both times went down a treat. Used lamb chops instead of shanks but was still amazing!

If you're a fan of cassoulet [I'm not] - you may like this recipe. Since everyone that rated this recipe seems to love it - I feel quite bad for rating it so poorly. I am willing to admit that the reason I didn't like it [at all] - could simply be, that I cooked it badly but I don't think so. I feel that this recipe is definitely one for lovers of very rich, concentrated, cloying flavours and I'm glad we tried it first, thus avoiding a dinner party disaster. My husband hated it - his words on the subject were, "what a waste of good lamb shanks" I did consider having another go, maybe using less balsamic and wine but why bother when there are great lamb shank recipies out there.

I cooked this for lunch yesterday and it was absolutely delicious and very easy to prepare. I think it would be good cooked in the slow cooker too. I couldn't get new potatoes so we had ordinary mash which worked well but I would like to try the crushed herb ones in the future.

I made this at the weekend, upscaled it for 6 people. Went down a treat! Beautiful tender lamb and a rich and unctuous sauce. Will definitely make this again :)

I made this last night for friends - possibly a shank each is a bit much - it is not what you would call a delicate meal but it was delicious and very very easy to make - the biggest problem was finding a big enough dish to cook it in.

I cooked this yesterday for my husband and myself. Delicious, and so easy to make. The combination of flavours were superb. Better than I've had in a restaurant. I will definitely be having this again. It would be a good receipe to do when entertaining.

EXCELLENT recipe. Had my inlaws coming for lunch & decided to try this recipe..and oh what a good impression I made! Meltingly tender lamb & super delicious sauce. I threw in a couple of carrots and leeks with the onions...but otherwise followed the recipe.

Totally easy recipe! Fryed the onions and browned the lamb then added to slow cooker with all other ingredients. Smells divine and tastes fab! Converted my lamb loating hubby to a lamb lover!
