  • 200g smoked mackerel
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill
  • 150ml double cream
  • 100ml fish stock
  • 2 tbsp creamed horseradish

Method

  1. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Cook the potatoes and onion in boiling, salted water for 6-7 mins until almost tender. Drain well. Grease a 20 x 20cm baking dish with a little of the butter, then arrange the potatoes in it.

  2. Break the fish into chunky pieces, discarding any skin and bones. Tuck the pieces in and around the potatoes, then scatter over the dill. Whisk the cream, stock and horseradish together and season. Pour over the potatoes. Dot the remaining butter over the top, then bake for 20-25 mins until golden. Serve with a green salad, if you like.

Just cooked this for my 16 month old as well as my husband and myself. Went down a storm. Agree it could do with a tad more sauce but still very tasty. Love that it is genuinely simple to make and economical but still lots of good flavours. Used creme Fraiche.

I expected the ingredients to be more 'melded' - I may try it again and cut the potatoes in slice - more like potato dauphinoise with mackerel in.
Although it tasted nice, for all the faff & washing up, I think I'd have enjoyed mackerel with steamed potatoes just as much.
First time I'd used horseradish in cooking, I used to think I didnt like it, but I will experiment with using it with potatoes again.

Really tasty recipe that has become one of our family favourites. It's economical and everyone loves it plus it's so quick and easy to make. I tend to reduce potatoes slightly and add a bit more mackerel, lovely when it's spread in a larger dish so the bits on top go a bit crispy.

Really nice - halved ingredients for two, but still made 3/4 of the sauce after reading comments. Used 1/2 fat crème fraiche and it was fine. Also added some mushrooms which I'd microwaved for 1.5 mins first so I could drain off the liquid before throwing them in, and put some grated cheese on top too. Lovely served with some tenderstem broccoli and my husband said it was a winner too! Definitely a "do again" recipe and easy-peasy for midweek meal.

I also tried this with creme fraiche instead of cream, but it separated when cooking, maybe I cooked it too long? Had no fish stock, so keep some water back from potatoes and added a teaspoon of veg stock power. I also hate horseradish so used a teaspoon of grainy mustard. After all that it still tasted nice!!

Had some smoked mackerel, but the weather was cold so didn't want a salad. This absolutely filled the bill, quick,easy,tasty, nutritious. I also used creme fraiche and we thoroughly enjoyed this dish. Will be making it again.

My hubby cooked this for me and it was delicious. He said it was really easy! Our 2yr old son seemed to enjoy it too. Will definitely cook again (great for a cheap dinner)

First time I wasn't so keen but we tried again and boiled the potatoes longer than suggested, I also added less horse radish and at the end grilled the bake to make the potatoes crispier. Really yummy even with creme fraiche replacing the cream to make it low fat.

Cheap, very easy to make & very tasty. I also used half fat creme fraiche instead of cream. I agree with sammarie's comment on it needing a little more sauce.

A simple but tasty dish, I enjoyed this. I used half-fat creme fraiche instead of cream (to save calories) and it worked well. I would've liked a little more sauce, but I think this was because I used extra potatoes and didn't increase the other ingredients. I'll make it again, but will add more stock etc.

I thought this was very simple and tasty. I don't like horseradish either so I only put 1 tablespoon in, thanks Vicky. I used Sainsburys Taste the difference, might risk a little more next time as it wasn't strong.

My husband and I love this recipe, quick and so so tasty. I used tesco finest horseradish sauce for this and it was perfect.

I thought that this dish would be sooo tasty, but the horseradish totally overpowered it - and I only used 1tbs (I do like horesradish sauce btw) My advice would be to use a mere dab to give a hint of flavour

Best horseradish sauce is from Aldi.

Adding anchovies or chopped coriander as a final garnish is a delicious add on.
