Method

  1. Put the muslin on a flat surface and tip the sugar, ginger and nutmeg into the centre. Tie into a pouch with fine string and attach to the neck of the wine bottle. Then attach the cinnamon stick to the bottle with a little raffia.
  2. Stick the cloves into the orange and pack into a box lined with raffia or shredded paper, with the wine.
  3. Tie a label to the wine bottle with the following instructions: 'Tip the contents of the muslin bag into a pan with the wine, orange, cinnamon stick and 300ml/½pt water. Simmer for 5 mins, then serve.'
Try

Make ahead

Kit keeps for 1 week with the orange, 6 weeks without, so add the orange later if you are making ahead.

Which wine?

You can use whatever wine you fancy for this - a smooth shiraz always works well.

Presentation

Tie the spice mix for the mulled wine kit in some butter muslin.

I gave these to friends last year and they are still talking about what a nice gift to recieve, and we are nearly at Christmas again, so easy to do. This year they will recieve a bottle of spiced Arancello and a bag of Fruity Christmas Biscotti, I hope these go down as well as the Mulled wine Kit.

I made a lot of these for Christmas 2007. I covered shoe boxes with Christmas wrapping paper and made fancy tags with the instructions written on. Something so simple, inexpensive as you want to make it, well presented, traditional, useful, easy to do - went down well with all that received it last year. My efforts last year to make presents (all ideas from Good Food) impressed all that received, and gave all the incentive to have a go this year. Isn't that what Christmas is all about? Get in your kitchen this year, never mind fighting your way around the shops!!

Gave this as part of a Christmas hamper to parents and in-laws. Went down very well with both and was so easy and quick to prepare. Will definitely give this as a present again.
