I think Lesley Walters did a good job in the mixture of ingredients in the sandwiches, the only change I made in the Salmon Smash is, for my taste, would be a little Vinegar instead of Tomato Ketchup.

grandchildren loves them BUT would not even consider using marmite for children........the advert was banned on telly promoting giving to them...WHY would I want to encourage them to develop an unhealthy strong taste for salt?

Just made the cheesy apple slaw for my lunch at work tomorrow. Couldn't resist tasting a bit and it was gorgeous. Instead of granary bread or rolls I used flour tortillas to make some wraps.

With comment to the marmite comment: This was in reference to its apparently high content but if you read into this it is banned because it is measured per 100 grams. I dont think you will find many adults let alone children that will consume 100 grams of marmite in one sitting! Marmite should not have been blacklisted like this as it can enrich the diet with essential B vitamins.

I'm tempted to try the cheesy apple slaw even though I was dubious at first. I just made the nicest bagel with avocado, black pepper, smoked salmon and a little sliced red chilli to give it a kick. Highly recommend!

i feel very cross with the way we have to potray food to our children, we used to eat all sorts when we were kids and not have any problems now, my daughter now has problems with her eating habits as she is constantly having what she should and should not eat forced down her throat, leave the children alone and let them enjoy their child hood.

Have used the mackerel one for ages and loved - we always make with slight variation though - squeeze of lime (or lemon) as the acidity help balance the smokiness. Also black pepper if it is not already the pepper covered type of mackerel...

Made the cheesy apple slaw and it was lovely and refreshing. Served it at a tea party and went down a treat with guests. I used quark instead of mayonnaise to counter the calories and fat and its sourness gave a nice kick to the whole. Since quantities aren't mentioned, I used one green apple to around 50g shredded cheese, one tbsp of quark, 2 medium spring onions, one tsp lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste. All this spread generously to make 3 sandwiches, cut up into 4 to give 12 tea party sandwiches.

Love the cheesy apple slaw. Added some walnut pieces. Yum. As for Marmite. I wasn't aware of an ad being banned....we're a Vegemite family through and through. I've worked out that one sandwich uses about 3g. Salt addicted? Don't think so.

Loved the cheesy apple slaw, adding the walnut sound s like a great idea. Will definately try that next time. Banning the marmite add is rediculous, for such a small amount of salt per serving, the health benefits of it far outway that. I think its unhealthy to cut anything out of your childs diet. Educate them on the nutritional pros and cons of everything they eat and give it in the right quantity. Even salt is needed for your body to funtion properly.

i'm always up for new sandwich ideas to tempt the fiance away from takeaway sandwiches! costs way too much, and he's happy to have a small bag of packed lunch in his work bag, unlike some of my friends partners! i'll have to try out all of these, i make myself a packed lunch every morning now, makes it so much easier to get out of the house later on with kids in tow. this week we've had tuna with sliced apple, slivers of celery, black pepper, mayo mixed up with cherry tomatoes and cucumber in a pitta; boiled eggs mashed with wholegrain mustard and mayo in rolls, today was mini chicken fillets grilled with lime zest, cream cheese and coriander, lambs lettuce in a toasted sesame bagel! next week im gonna make coronation chicken, the cheesy apple slaw and the salmon smash, although the ketchup is putting me off!

We went for a picnic yesterday, Fathers Day & there were a few vegetarians so i needed something different from the usual. Although everyone made a face at the sound of the cheesy apple slaw ones, there wasn't one left, they were lovely. I also did the cream cheese & roasted red pepper too, both a massive hit.!
