Fantastic appetiser. So simple but very, very effective! I used garlic cream cheese to give it a bit of an extra twist.

If you used red peppers (from a jar) or thinly-sliced cucumber this would make a vegetarian alternative

Fabulous recipe! Impressive looking but so easy I used garlic-cream cheese and leek (4 cm.) instead of dill, made it for our villages's annual "New Year nibble contest" and won first prize!!

Made these for a party and they disappeared in no time - varied the recipe for the vegetarians by substituting hummus, and used less cream cheese to make them less moist and roll properly. Great to make ahead then just unwrap and slice immediately before serving - more time spent with my guests.

We loved these. Made for sister's 60th party and my six-year-old nephew kept returning when I was cutting off the end-bits to make a straight edge and helpfully eating all the "spare ends.!"

I was worried about the slicing up at the end here ie whether to use a serrated knife (which I guess is best for cutting smoked salmon), or an unserrated one (which I imagine would be best for cutting tortilla)? So there was a little sawing/switching of knives (on my part) and tearing (on the part of the food) and sometimes the tortillas unravelled a bit. A tip for anybody yet to make this - if you cut off a slice and it looks less than perfect, turn it over - the other side may look better - this happened to me with a few slices :-). I couldn't comment on the taste as I am a vegetarian and I got no comments on it from my guests.

These are fabulous! I used half plain cream cheese and half garlic/herb cream cheese which was delicious. Do leave them in the fridge before you serve them to firm them up and for ease of cutting.

I make these often for birthday parties. I can't always find dill so use chives instead and always add grated lemon rind to give them an extra kick.

These were brilliant! I didn't use large tortillas so they were all very small and bitesize, but worked wonders. Realised you only really needed to cover 3/4 of the tortilla with salmon or you'd have loads squishing out everywhere. Tried a veggie option with some of the suggestions on here of hummous and cream cheese. While it tasted relaly good, it was a bit boring to look at so will reinvestigate that shortly.
