  1. Combine all the ingredients in a large, heavy saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over a medium heat, then simmer uncovered, stirring frequently, for 30-40 mins, or until thick and pulpy. Remove from the heat, leave to cool and transfer to sterilised, clean, dry jars and seal.

Mine was a little runny but cooked it for more than an hour to see if it would thicken up. Not sure what I did wrong ? I used Granny Smith apples as I'm in the USA and not sure what cooking apples they use over here yet. But it tastes awesome ! and made loads.

First chutney I've ever made - absolutely easy & foolproof to make & tastes fantastic! You'll never want shop bought chutney again! Recomend Canadian Extra Mature Cheddar to go with it!!!

Lovely recipe, I used mixed dried fruit instead of raisins, Added some mixed spice and used mustard powder instead of seeds. Tasted lovely. Another christmas present sorted. Will go nicely with the red onion marmalade and some cheese and biscuits.

Used apples from my garden to make this chutney. It turned out great, but took a lot longer to thicken up. Next time I will use more onion and fewer raisins.

It took more than 2hours (you said 40-50mins.), but produced 2litres! (you said 1!) what am I doing wrongly?

In my garden I get a glut of Bramleys apples and blackberries shortly followed by chestnuts. Do you think this recipe would work adding blackberries and chestnuts to it?

This chutney is great. It's very easy to make although it took me longer than 25 minutes to prepare everything - mainly the apples of course. The colour is just like a well known branded pickle but the taste is even better! I might try using different spices next time as others have done.

yes i made this chutney but i added green beans and and more spices to the apple chutney very good no not for a special occasion i grew tomatoe plants and had far to manyso added those to

You can't beat apple chutney, especially with cold meats the day after! I love making things that last as well, so if you make enough jars you can not only give to friends and family but will not have to buy a jar of chutney all year!

I used dessert apples for this recipe beacause we had so many so I reduced the amount of sugar to 500g from 750g and it worked well. I wasn't sure if the weight of apples was after peeling and coring or before. I opted for after and the recipe made 7 x 1lb jars worth.
It took me twice as long to peel and chop the apples than the preparation time given but maybe that was because they were smaller and I had to chop out bruises & inhabitants. Otherwise it was straightforward and easy. It tastes great now even though I guess it needs to mature.
I will definitely make it again next year.

Read the comments but decided to stick with the recipe and glad we did - it was delicious! I have never made chutney before but it was so easy. It did take longer than the recommended 30-40 mins to thicken (closer to an hour) but patience paid off. We have a glut of apples in the garden so will definitely make again. Great for presents!

I am fast becoming a chutneyaholic! This is delicious although sweet and really easy to make. I put in 600g sugar and an extra onion and its still on the sweet side. PW- I got 6 450g jars out of it.

This was my first attempt at making chutney...and now I'm converted - easier than jam! I read all the comments first and decided to add my own twist - 4 tablespoons of Pataks rogan Josh curry paste - the result is devine! I am now going to attempt sweet chilli jam and onion marmalade.....
