Classic apple chutney

Serve this classic chutney with roast crackling pork for a change from apple sauce

Method

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a large, heavy saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over a medium heat, then simmer uncovered, stirring frequently, for 30-40 mins, or until thick and pulpy. Remove from the heat, leave to cool and transfer to sterilised, clean, dry jars and seal.

    Why have I never made chutney before? It's so easy and tastes really delicious. Next time I'll put in more onion and not as many raisins.

    Lovely recipe - I made it with windfall apples that I scrumped from a field at the back of our house and will take a jar to the Harvest Thanksgiving service on Sunday. As I had some fresh ginger in the fridge, I used that instead of the powder, and realise later that I should have grated rather than chopped it - but we all love ginger and think it tastes great.

    I made this today, it was so easy, just chuck it all in a pan. I added less raisins & a bit of mix spice. Yum!!

    Even though I'm a lover of quince with cheese, I found this to be very sweet, and overloaded with a few things. In the less column: raisins (400g), vinegar (5-600ml), sugar (500-600g) perhaps use a darker sugar, but only 500g In the more column: apples (2kg) The extra sweetness was probably down to the fact that I used eaters instead of cookers (the extra sweetness would be needed to cut through the cookers, but even so probably not that much.

    This is so easy to make and tastes so nice - great with cheese. I didnt have mustard seeds so used mustard powder instead and the apples were windfall from a friends tree - not cooking apples.

    Very easy to make. I gave it away for Christmas presents this year, it was gratefully received and devoured! Goes fantastically well with cheese and ham. It's especially nice in a sandwich.

    This turned out really well. I didn't have raisins in at the time, so used some dried, ready to eat apricots (the dark, non-sulphured ones). I chopped them up, chucked them in the pan with a few extra spices (which included a good pinch or 2 of chilli flakes, some ground cloves, ground coriander seeds etc.) and it has turned out fantastic! Will definitley make again, as I still have lots of apples to use up. Try experimenting with a few more spices - it worked really well for me!

    This was my first attempt at making chutney...and now I'm converted - easier than jam! I read all the comments first and decided to add my own twist - 4 tablespoons of Pataks rogan Josh curry paste - the result is devine! I am now going to attempt sweet chilli jam and onion marmalade.....
