Method

  1. Break the Madeira cake and cookies into the bowl of a food processor, pour in the melted milk chocolate and whizz to combine.
  2. Tip the mixture into a bowl, then use your hands to roll into about 10 walnut-sized balls. Chill for 2 hrs until really firm.
  3. Push a skewer into each ball, then carefully spoon the white chocolate over the cake balls to completely cover. Stand the cake pops in the pumpkin, then press a Smartie onto the surface while wet. Chill again until the chocolate has set. Before serving, using the icing pens, add a pupil to each Smartie and wiggly red veins to the eyeballs.

this recipe doesn't look like the picture at all, the white chocolate is difficult to handle. Fun to do but a little disappointing.

I actually followed the recipe exactly, which is not something I usually manage to do. It was more fiddly than it seemed and took longer to prepare then I'd thought. As with the previous comment (which I only just now read), the white chocolate was difficult to work with and dripped everywhere and didn't cover as "whitely" as the photo implies. Also, careful not to chill the balls too hard before attempting the skewer them. I skewered my index finger, which didn't help my attitude at all. Still, it got raves at the party and the kids did enjoy them. I'll definitely make them again.

Love this recipe. Although it is more time consuming then I thought, it has been great fun to do and a resounding success. Everyone thinks these are wonderful. And they taste delightful too. I will be making these again.

These are quite messy to make and they don't turn out quite as good looking as the photo but they are really yummy and the children thought they were cool. Would make again.

Made these today with my son. They were really easy to make. White chocolate was a bit of a pain, couldn't get it really smooth looking like in the pic, but they look really good. I found them very sweet (i don't really eat sweet stuff), but the kids loved them. Will be making for next halloween.

My kids really enjoyed making these for our halloween party tomorrow. I like the way the vanilla filling in the Oreos adds an extra flavour to the chocolate, and the madeira cake crumbs (we used a cheap ready-made one) make the mixture nice and soft and easy to mould. Very more-ish!

Sadly, this was not a fun activity with the children. The sticks wouldn't go into the balls after chilling and some balls shattered. The white chocolate was too fiddly - Smarties fell off if it was too runny and wouldn't stay on if it was too set. The 2 chilling times made it a long activity, but that was my fault for not reading it properly beforehand! Children enjoyed eating them though.

A good idea, but it should be noted that only white cooking chocolate should be used! Vegetable oils in non cooking white chocolate leaves a lumpy consistency - unless you want to make eyes that have worts. . .

These look great when finished. Wish I'd read the comments before attempting them. Had a problem getting the lollipop stick in & a few broke in two. Next time I will put the lollipop sticks in before chilling the balls. If you have a sweet tooth, you will love these. Kids loved making them for Halloween.

My sister-in-law made these for halloween, tasted lovely and looked as they did in the picture, recommend they are taken out of the fridge 30mins before serving.

Made these with my daughter. As said above, quite fiddly and the white chocolate was dripping everywhere. They tasted lovely though, very rich, my husband could only manage 1 bite! The children loved them.

I made these for a halloween party I held. They were very fiddily to make, and the comments about the eyeballs not being as white as in the picture are true - but then white chocolate is never that white. But they were still very impressive and I was very pleased with the end result.

I found the cake balls quite hard so pre made a hole using a metal skewer and dipped cake pop stick into chocolate to act as glue.. Then used normal white chocolate, I put cake pops into some polystyrene while drip drying (I put them outside which seemed to wok well I.e less drips) and then dipped again. Obviously need double the amount of chocolate stated... Worked brilliantly!! Am V pleased with results :-)

These were great fun to make although a little time consuming. I bought proper lolly sticks to make these and put them into the balls before chilling. I also dipped the pops twice in the white chocolate to get a nice even coverage. They were messy to dip and dip drip everywhere but end result was great and tasty too. The children loved them.

Yes they are a bit fiddly and they look a bit different but they're still good fun and the kids LOVED them. Will def make them again. I used left over sponge cake I had in the freezer and since i don't have a food processer, I would suggest you bash the biscuits with a rolling pin and then mix them into the chocolate with the crumbled cake; it works just as well.

Looked brilliant when done but I agree with the above that they are fiddly to make and do take a long time. If you've got the patience to sit a twizzle the pops for 10 minutes each whilst the white chocolate sets so that they're covered evenly they do look really great though and are so effective for gruesome treats for kids on haloween! I'd make them again but leave myself a lot more time to prepare!

I made these to hand out to the kids on Halloween and they were a huge success. I left the white chocolate to cool for about 5 minutes before dipping and it worked very well. I laid them on greaseproof paper and then just used a knife to trim off the excess that gathered at the back.

Oh, and I also froze the cake pops before dipping which also helped to set the chocolate quickly.
