  2. In a separate dish beat the remaining butter and sugar together for 10 mins until the butter turns pale and the sugar starts to dissolve. Beat in the eggs, then carefully fold in the flour with a large spoon. Spread the batter over the apples, then bake for 45 mins until golden. Serve with the custard, below.

The apples weren't soft enough and should be more like a compote. I would pre-cook them next time. Also, the cake mix is quite dry and needs to be sweeter really. Definitely not a pudding. I'm not a fan of custard (I had a little cream) so wasn't able to smother it to disguise these facts!

Clean forgot to add the raisins! Was lovely, like the use of soft brown sugar - made the sponge rich and gave it some depth. Made a large pudding, at least 6 servings!

Delicious. Only addition was a sprinkling of nutmeg over the apples.

Wonderful pud! As a result of a previous comment, I decided to stew the apples on their own first, but I'm not sure this was really necessary. I substituted the flour with gluten free - the sponge still tasted good and none of my guests guessed!

This dessert is definatly must try even if you don't like sponge puddings or even apple its got some thing for every one and it all blends in well together. I don't like sponge products but this was fantastic and my guests loved it or they said they did. I will certainly make this again. Many thanks for putting it one

Perhaps Phillippa needs to cut the apple into thinner slices? This is a tasty and straightforward recipe - will definitely make again. I was worried that the full quantity of topping might not fit in my dish, so I only used 3/4 (3 eggs etc). I used about 2lb of apples for this reduced quantity of topping. It still made 6 servings though!

This tasted delicious but the apples weren't cooked at the same time as the sponge - ended up taking the sponge off and cooking the apple some more. All the same it was delicious but next time I might cook the apple separately first.

I added some extra cinammon to this for some extra flavouring and it was delicious! Really lovely easy pudding. I also had too much apple, so I ended up only using 4.
