  • 400g penne (or other tube shape) pasta
  • 250g pack chestnut or button mushrooms, wiped clean
  • 8 rashers streaky bacon



    Bacon is pork that has been cured one of two ways: dry or wet. It can be bought as both rashers…

  • 4 tbsp pesto (fresh from the chiller cabinet if possible)



    Pesto is a generic Italian name for any sauce made by pounding ingredients together.


  • 200ml carton 50% fat crème fraîche
  • handful basil leaves


  1. Cook the pasta in boiling water in a large non-stick saucepan according to pack instructions. Meanwhile, slice the mushrooms and snip the bacon into bite-size pieces with scissors or a sharp knife.

  2. Reserve a few drops of the cooking water in a cup or bowl, then drain the pasta and set aside. Fry the bacon and mushrooms in the same pan until golden, about 5 mins. Keep the heat high so the mushrooms fry in the bacon fat, rather than sweat.

  3. Tip the pasta and reserved water back into the pan and stir over the heat for 1 min. Take the pan off the heat, spoon in the pesto and crème fraîche and most of the basil and stir to combine. Sprinkle with the remaining basil to serve.

Absolutely gorgeous. Easy to do. The mushrooms were lovely in it. I used smoked back bacon which not only tasted lovely but smelt fantastic. Can't wait to do it again. My husband said 'Yummy'.

Fantastic flavours from the fresh herbs and pesto. Quick and easy to make. Served mine with garlic bread and swapped the creme fraiche for around 40g of half fat cream cheese which seemed to work well to add some creaminess without overpowering the other flavours. Overall a must try recipe.

This is a brilliant recipe, cheap and quick. Ideal for a mid week meal. The quantities are about perfect, although I do tend to use a whole typical jar size of pesto. Cherry tomatoes work well as an addition, but it works well with the few simple ingredients listed. Enjoy!

This one came out rather well! I just wish it hadn't tasted as similar to a bacon and mushroom risotto I made some time ago, but hey - it's got the same two main ingredients, so I guess it makes sense! The pesto really adds a little something to it :)

This recipe looks lovely but the diary free option is no good as there is cheese in pesto! Another suggestion would be great!

I made this quick and easy pasta dish for a family get together, serving it with a salad. It was a huge hit especially with my 13 year old grandson. He can be a picky eater, but had two helpings - a rare event. Even more amazing, he is learning about different types of pasta at school and had to take in a favourite recipe, and say why teenagers would like it. His comment was that it's the best pasta he'd ever had, and he's a teenager!

made this tonight, used red pesto and didnt add the creme fraiche as shop didnt have any. also added a garlic clove when frying the bacon and mushroom. this was one of the nicest pasta dishes i have had, really enjoyed it and will definitely be making it again

Again very quick just make sure you have good bacon otherwise the pesto can be over powering

This recipe is very simple, but not particularly good unless you make your own pesto. But ultimately this dish tastes as simple as it is.

Easy to make and tasty, I'd suggest a little less pesto as can be quite over powering. I'll definately be making this again soon.
