Method

  1. Dust the pork steaks with the Chinese five-spice powder. Heat half the oil in a frying pan and fry the pork for about 3 mins on each side until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate.
  2. Add the remaining oil to the frying pan, reduce the heat slightly, then fry the onion wedges for 2 mins. Add the apples and cook, stirring occasionally, for another 3 mins.
  3. Add the redcurrant jelly to the pan, followed by the vinegar and then the stock. Bring to the boil and simmer rapidly, uncovered, for 8-10 mins until the sauce is slightly syrupy and the apples are tender. Gently reheat the pork in the sauce, turning to glaze each side.
Try

Sticky pineapple pork

Fry the spice-dusted pork as above, then after you've added the onions, replace the apples with 140g pineapple chunks. Stir in the vinegar with 2 tbsp honey and 1 tbsp dark soy sauce, then return the pork to the pan to re-heat and glaze.

So easy and so tasty! Used Thai Seven Spice as didn't have the Chinese 5 spice and turned out really tasted. Thickened with a bit of cornflour and served with some brown rice. Just delicious!

I decided at the last minute to give this a go. I didn't have Five Spice or Chicken stock so substituted a pork seasoning with sage, onion & apple & beef stock. Reasonably quick & very easy to make. The pork was very tasty & everyone loved it; the children weren't too keen on the apples though. I did think they could have been a bit softer but all in all a hit. Will make this again but as the recipe states next time.

Really enjoyed this meal, I would say that in my dish the sauce dried up before softening the apples to my taste, I like them soft (others who were with me thought the apples were fine) but other than that it was great!

My partner and I, don't particularly like pork as it can be a bit bland, however, I made this for us tonight, (didn't have any redcurrant jelly, so substituted with cranberry) and it was absolutely delicious, he said he would definately eat it again.

Delicious!! I loved it so much that I think I ate it all. Four apples are not many if you want to have with your starchy complement a rich sauce.

Absolutely delicious! I used cranberry sauce instead of the jelly and it made a great substitute. Will be cooking as a dinner party main for our guests!

Had this for tea this evening. We used 3 apples instead of 4 and cut them into small chunks which was better for us. Also had no redcurrant so substituted mango chutney which worked a treat. Definitely would make again.

Altered this somewhat as didn't have any apples. Substituted red peppers for the apples and used honey, soy sauce and white wine vinegar in place of the redcurrant jelly and the red wine vinegar. Delicious, although next time will reduce the amount of five spice a little. Served with creamy mashed potatoes.

Yummy! Loved this! Was cooking for 2, but used the full amount of sauce ingredients as wanted lots of sauce/gravy -was perfect, only used 1 apple for 2 people though! Did this with mash - will cook this again!
