  • 4 boneless pork loin steak, trimmed of any fat

  • 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar or cider vinegar
  • 200ml chicken stock


  1. Dust the pork steaks with the Chinese five-spice powder. Heat half the oil in a frying pan and fry the pork for about 3 mins on each side until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate.

  2. Add the remaining oil to the frying pan, reduce the heat slightly, then fry the onion wedges for 2 mins. Add the apples and cook, stirring occasionally, for another 3 mins.

  3. Add the redcurrant jelly to the pan, followed by the vinegar and then the stock. Bring to the boil and simmer rapidly, uncovered, for 8-10 mins until the sauce is slightly syrupy and the apples are tender. Gently reheat the pork in the sauce, turning to glaze each side.

Made the pineapple version as I hate cooked apple. It was delicious! I used pork rib steaks (More like a chop, bone-in) which were massive so I had to finish them off in the oven, cooked in a bit of leftover stock (I had made twice the amount required just so I didn't need to faff about cutting a stock cube in half!) so they weren't dry as pork can sometimes be. I also used apple cider vinegar in place of red wine vinegar, and shallots instead of red onion. I didn't have any redcurrant jelly so I subbed it for sweet onion marmalade. My sauce ended up more like a topping as my two year old spilled the soy, vinegar and honey mix leaving me with only half the amount of liquid, so instead of using it to pour over the meat I mixed it in with the plain boiled rice I was serving as an accompaniment. I loved it and will definitely make this again.

Made this for the 4th time today (sliced up a pork tenderloin this time). Always delicious. My lot didn't like pork chops until I made this! Works every time . Scrummy.

Very tasty and popular with the whole family. I always cut down the apples by half. I serve with mashed potato and cabbage.

I always find pork chops boring. This has transformed them. Delicious. Loved by all the family. Even my 7 month baby led weaning baby enjoyed. Especially the apples!

SO yummy! I followed the recipe except I didn't have chinese 5 spice so I just used a bit of cinnamon instead. I also used a wok to make the sauce and probably boiled it a bit too vigorously but it was amazing and made a super yummy sauce with disintegrating apples in, mmmmm. Served with mini roast potatoes (both sweet potatoes and normal)

SO delicious, my family loved it too!
I used shallots instead of red onion, as that was all I had. I also finished off cooking the pork loin steaks in the oven whilst I cooked everything else in the pan.
It was a lovely meal.

Very simple and quick to cook. I used 2 onions and 2 apples, cut thinly and given time to reduce. Served with mash and kale. Wonderful stuff.

So delicious! what a great recipe, so tasty and quick. Highly recommend. I have cooked for 2 so only used one large apple, also didn't have any red wine vinegar so used big splash of red wine :) and little bit of white wine vinegar. also I have added red pepper a little bit of garlic and i didnt have any redcurrant jelly so used damson jelly. it was fantastic! only downside was that there wasn't more :D. I have served it with mash and chilli & garlic spring greens, that I have also found on this website. Yum

AMAZING! This is one of the best dishes I've ever cooked from the website. The pork with the 5 spice is gorgeous alongside the syrupy sauce and tender apples. The red onion goes so well with it too. I served this with mashed potato and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

A nice tasting recipe but would leave the apples out if I did it again, they went a funny texture. Served with spicy cous cous for speed & was lovely!

Really wanted to use pork steaks up but had to improvise with ingredients I didnt have. Here's what I replaced and it worked a treat!
Replaced Redcurrant jelly with homemade cranberry sauce left over from Christmas. Replaced apples with dried apricots and I had no red wine vinegar so added a splash of white wine vinegar and a splash of red wine. I served it with roasted potatoes and carrots. It was fruity but not overpowering and I dont usually like recipes with meat and fruit in. Will certainly make way!

A lovely dish although the apple took quite a long time to cook. Would definitely recommend though :)

Very lovely! Added some peppers and less apples and used more stock to make more of a sauce. Also used Balsamic vinegar. Kids were not too keen on the flavour of the chinese five spice but ate some of it. Served it with beans and mash.

helo i have no five spice can i use mixed herbs as a alternative also can i use red wine instead of red wine vinegar x
