  1. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Mix the flours and baking powder in a mixing bowl with a pinch of salt, if you like. Add the butter and rub with your fingertips until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs (or use a food processor). Stir in ½ of the cheese and make a well in the centre.

  2. Whisk the remaining ingredients together and pour into the well. With a cutlery knife, bring the mixture together to make a soft, but not sticky dough. Add a little more milk if the dough is too dry.

  3. Turn onto a floured surface, then roll out to about 2cm thick. Stamp out 4 scones using a round cutter, then gather the trimmings and repeat until all the dough has been used. Put on a baking sheet, brush with milk and scatter over remaining cheese. Bake for 10-12 mins until golden. Cool on a wire rack.

Really delicious, used twice the marmite and extra milk rather than yoghurt. I only made little ones and they were easily cooked in the ten minutes. Great for my fussy kids lunch boxes .... (If there are any left by Monday ! )

Needed a splash more milk, used creme fraiche as I didn't have any yoghurt, added a pinch of cayenne...they taste great! The wholemeal flour (allinsons wholemeal plain) made a huge difference, lovely flavour

Just made these....little tiny ones. Didn't have yogurt so used extra milk...not sure i used the right wholemeal flour......i only had strong brown bread flour in the cupboard.....the dough was awfully tough, so i was slightly worried i was baking rocks but all is well. Not sure about going swimming this after noon though :)

These turned out really well. Like another person has commented, I used wholemeal bread flour as that is all I had in which probably gave it the extra boost and made them rise. I missed out the yoghurt using extra milk instead. I agree that the marmite flavour is not very strong and will double next time.

Bit disappointed with mine, they had a lovely taste but did not rise at all! Will try again using self raising flour only and perhaps a 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder.

I usually love Marmite - but found it a bit overpowering. Expected to love this recipe, so a little disappointed - might try again with smaller amount.

I used gluten free flour, but added an extra egg and a bit more baking powder and they came out brilliantly. My dad, recently diagnosed as having coeliac disease loved them and said they tasted 'normal'!! Apparently a very great compliment!

This is a very easy recipe and even people who don't normally like Marmite, like my partner, seem to love these and say that the added Marmite adds a little something to the scones.

It's hit and miss for me to be able to get scones to rise it seems, but that's a refection on my technique, not on the recipe.

Just made these with my 9 year old daughter. We made them on a whim so thank you Elizabeth, I used extra milk instead of yoghurt. I also substituted the marmite for chives from the garden. Scrummy!!!

I have made these twice - without the marmite - and they are delicious. We had them with soup, sausages, and even by themselves with butter.

I added more than double the required milk, and they cooked for double the time, if not more.

Very easy and certainly rewarding.

Lovely and very more-ish. I used wholemeal self-raising flour instead of the mix suggest, and I will add a little extra baking powder next time as they didn't rise very much, but they were still delicious and I'm going to have to bake another batch for tomorrow's picnic as these won't last!!
