  1. Butter and line a 30cm x 21cm tin. Preheat the oven to fan 160/conventional 180/gas 4. Break up the chocolate with the butter and melt in the microwave on Medium for about 5 minutes, stirring halfway through.

  2. Beat the sugar and eggs in a bowl. Stir in the melted chocolate, add the flour and beat well. Pour into the tin and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top looks papery and feels slightly wobbly. Leave to cool in the tin.

  3. Break up the chocolate with the butter and melt in the microwave on Medium for about 1 minute. Stir until smooth then spread over the cake. Dust with icing sugar and cut into squares.

I have made these brownies twice and today I am going to make them again. It is my favourite brownie recipe because they come out as excpected and delicious!! 5 stars!

I've just tried this brownie recipe out. I used whatever chocolate I had on hand and also I halved it just to ensure it wouldn't be a total loss if it were a flop. I reduced the sugar to 200g but it was still too sweet I felt. However that might be because I used milk chocolate rather than dark chocolate.

The brownie turned out moist and tasty. Everyone was pleased and happily tucked into it.

I made these and they were really yummy gooey chocolate brownies. Easy to follow recipe and easy to make . Kids and hubby loved them too , they will definitely be a firm favourite in this household . Didn't do the choc topping as didn't get time they were too moorish to wait to add melted choc but I did spread with some Nutella on a piece hmmm delish

These were delish.
Took no time to made as i just scooped them off the pavement ready made.

Made as detailed and have to say these were amazing. The thin hard chocolate topping layer really finished it off. Did not find it too sickly as some wrote.
Will definetly make again.
Much better than any shop bought ones.

Excellent brownie. Firm yet moist. Not too rich. I did not make the topping as it was not needed. I did however add chunks of white chocolate before baking. About 300g was enough. DELICIOUS!!!!!

I have just made this, it's such an easy recipe to follow, and turned out perfectly. I had no caster sugar so I used a light brown sugar instead. I halved the recipe, and it filled an 8" square tin perfectly. I didn't use the topping going by the previous comments, and I have to agree that it probably doesn't need it. So more'ish, I'll certainly be making this again.

I love this recipe, it's great to take to social gatherings/parties. I always use half dark/half milk chocolate, as I find all dark chocolate too rich. I think adding nuts, could work well. Next time I may try adding walnuts or peacans.

first time i've made brownies and these came out delicious! lovely and gooey with crunchy top. left out the topping as some suggested but added white chocolate chips, yum! everyone loved them.

I definetly recommend this! It turned out exacltly how to recipe said it would! I agree with the other comments it would be to sickly with the topping so I left it out aswell.

Love this recipe. It's my go to recipe if I fancy something chocolate-y. I do, however, use milk chocolate over dark as it is too rich when using dark chocolate.

Amazing recipe - my brownies turned out really yummy - however I ended up making mixing all the ingredients together first and I used a rubber baking tray. Will definitely use this recipe again.

For some reason my rating appeared as 1 star not 5!!!

Made these today and am very pleased with the results. Like some other reviewers, I didn't add the topping as the brownie is already very rich. This is a good basic brownie recipe, with plenty of scope for jazzing it up with added nuts / dried fruit / choc chips. Rum soaked raisins spring to mind.....

Made these for my work colleagues & they went down a storm! Not sickly at all & even a colleague who does not like chocolate cake enjoyed these!

This was my first attempt at brownies and was encouraged by the reviews to give this a whirl. I halved the quantities and cooking time and still had more than enough for a lot of people. I used a cake tin but still had enough left over to make mini muffins brownies. It is very rich, as others have said the topping isn't really needed - unless of course you want to pre-book yourself into hospital for a coronary! Gorgeously gooey and very easy to make.

Absolutely gorgeous! I didn't do the extra topping, but they were great on their own. Took some into work, and have gone down very well. Will definitely make again. Five stars!!

Leave out the topping. The brownie is very rich without it, so might be sickly with additional chocolate and butter.
