Sweetening the apples with apricot jam and orange juice makes it twice as fruity and adding a little syrup to the oaty crumble makes great little chewy clusters

Method

  1. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Peel, core and thinly slice the apples and mix with the jam and orange juice. Spread evenly over a buttered 1.5-litre ovenproof dish, not too deep.
  2. Mix the oats, flour and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add the butter in small chunks and rub in gently. Stir in the sugar and rub in again. Drizzle over the syrup, mixing with a knife so it forms small clumps. Sprinkle evenly over the apples and bake for 30-35 mins until the juices from the apples start to bubble up. Cool for 10 mins, then serve with custard, cream or ice cream.

MAKING IT WITH OTHER FRUIT

You could use pears, plums or a mixture of winter fruits. A handful of blueberries is also good with the apples.

IF YOU WANT TO USE A SLOW COOKER...

Make this fruity warmer over a few hours. Peel, core and thinly slice the apples and mix with the jam and orange in your slow cooker. Cook on Low for 2-4 hours until tender. When they're nearly done, mix the topping ingredients in a tin and toast under a low grill for 1-2 mins until golden. Transfer your apples to a dish or leave in the pot, sprinkle over the crumble and serve as above.

I have made this recipe several times and everytime i do i am asked for the recipe as it is so tasty. Taditional apple is my favourite base but i have used other seasonal fruits with similar success. For the dieting foodies cut down on the sugar and leave out the apricot jam, after all every bit helps, and it will still taste just as good.

Excellent crumble! Very filling and comforting. I used apples and frozen rhubarb + blueberries - worked like a charm.

I have weekly lunches with 6 friends and was first served this by one lady who openly admits she cant cook and usually serves store desserts. Several of us introduced her to your website and magazine and this was one of the first dishes she tried. it was absolutely delicious. Ive cooked it several times too and it always goes down a treat. Very tasy.

This is one of my all time favourite puddings, I must have made it 20 times since it appeared in the magazine and the page is now all sticky! I tend to use more Golden Syrup than the recipe says (as much as double!) as everyone loves the chewy bits in the topping. Amzingly simple to make, and just wonderful to eat!

Made this twice, the first time I had a lot of pears to use up so used them as well as the apples and it was lovely. The second time I used strawberry jam as we had no apricot and it still tasted very good.

I often make a crumble for dessert when I have guests at home. This is just delicious. I served it with vanilla ice cream and all of it disappeared.

Really good, I didn't have an orange so I used some marmalade and apple juice instead. My 18 month old son adores it!

Before coming across this page, I've made something similar many times. I use cooking apples from my garden such as Bramleys, with cinnamon and sugar, but never golden syrup as I think this would be over sweet. My family enjoy it with ice cream, hot custard, cream or plain yoghurt!
