Method

  1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Drizzle half the oil into a small casserole or pie dish and rub all over, then place one steak inside. Scatter over some of the garlic, followed by a layer of onion and tomatoes, then a layer of potatoes on top. Season, then repeat the layers, finishing with the potato.
  2. Drizzle with the remaining oil and then cover the casserole with a tightly fitting lid or cover the pie dish with a double layer of foil. Transfer to the oven for 2 hrs. Remove the lid or foil, turn the oven up to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7 and cook for 30 mins more until the top is golden brown. Serve with some green vegetables.

Tried this last year and i'm still cooking it with the original ingredients, what makes it better than just good is the quality of your produce, it really needs good quality beef browned before putting into the dish and ripe good tasting large vine tomatoes for that garlicky tomato sauce.... a delicious supper.
Don't forget to deglaze the meat pan for maximum flavour!

This is an excellent midweek meal. I read everyone's comment and added extra garlic and really seasoned it well.
It was perfect, I was surprised by how tender the meat was, loved it a lot.

Both my husband enjoyed this dish but both said there was something missing - will be making it again but I think I'll be adding a few other ingredients to it. The dish itself is very simple to make and went really well with cauliflower instead of cabbage. For some reason it won't let me rate it - I'd give this one a 4.

I found the steak a bit dry even though I added plenty of OXO. Nevertheless it tasted lovely and was easy to make.

Made this the other night and will not be doing it again. It was lacking in taste and we could not finish it.

make this quite a lot, very easy and very tasty. i shall, next time, spread a thin layer of english mustard over the steaks and maybe leave out the garlic, for a little something extra!

I ran out of tomatoes when i made this dish once, so substituted some sun dried tomatoes i had, result was an even better one!! Have made it the same way since as even the kids liked it then!!

This is a lovely meal. The meat is tender and full of flavour. I add a little beef stock to make a garlicky gravy. Delicious.

I've cooked this a few times and it's always fab. Who would have thought that so few ingredients and very little preparation would taste so great!

This one works for me - but just needs a bit more garlic and tomato for me. It's so easy.

I didn't have a dish deep enough to stack the layers so had to make in two individual dishes.
The meal turned out ok but could have done with something extra, perhaps more seasoning

Easy to make, and basically cooks itself; results in great tender meat and a really satisfying supper

This is really easy to prepare and can be pretty much left alone once it is in the oven. Steak was really tender but next time I would use more seasoning. Would definately make this again!

Great mid-week supper - for someone who normally prefers a rare steak, this one was surprisingly tender and full of fresh flavour from the garlic and tomatoes. This one's a keeper!
