Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4/ fan 160C. Butter and line the base of a 20cm round cake tin.
  2. Put the butter, sugar, eggs, flour, baking powder, cinnamon and milk into a bowl. Beat with a wooden spoon for 2-3 minutes, or with an electric hand mixer for 1-2 minutes, until light and fluffy.
  3. Tip three quarters of the mixture into the tin, spread it level, then spoon the Nutella on in four blobs. Top with the remaining mixture, swirl a few times with a skewer, then smooth to cover the Nutella.
  4. Sprinkle with the nuts. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes, until risen, nicely browned, feels firm to touch and springs back when lightly pressed (cover with foil if it starts to brown too quickly). Cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then turn out, peel off the paper and cool on a wire rack. Wrap tightly in double thick foil to keep fresh for up to a week.

Yum, yum, yum. I'm not a huge cinnamon fan but this was lovely and just gave the cake a lovely warmth. I melted the nutella slightly before adding and it only needed 50 mins in my oven so be sure to check yours!

Made this to sell slices at work to raise money for Comic Relief - it was very popular, but I did manage to salvage one slice to bring home for my OH, who thought it was great.

Lovely cake! Made it as a surprise for my boyfriends birthday and as we were going away for the weekend had to make it a few days in advance. it was delicious! Nutella did sink despite small blobs and swirling lots, but I didnt think this mattered, and mine was cooked in 40 mins, so keep an eye on it!! Yummy

Would recommend extra cinnamon. Thought that cake was just ok. It didn't keep very well so I would only ever make it again if it was to be eaten the day it was made.

Such an easy cake to make and goes down well every time I make it. Would recommend covering the cake with foil after about 40 mins in the oven to keep it nice and moist and stop the hazelnuts on top turning too brown.

I made 2 of these cakes for work and 1 for home. Absolutely delicious and so easy to make. Didn't have any trouble with Nutella sinking to the bottom as i did give it a really good swirl, and when finished I spread 1 tablespoon of Nutella on top which made it look extra special and could be used for a dinner party dessert. Everyone loved this cake. Will definately make again.

Me and my girlfriend made this for something to do on a Saturday afternoon and though she wasn't fond of the hazlenuts on top she still enjoyed it. We had to substitute the cinnamon for some mixed spice, as half way through baking we found out we didn't have any, but it still came out delicious. Will have to make it again using cinnamon to see if that makes much difference to the end product. Top notch recipe.

I make this cake all the time and it's delicious and easy to make. I must admit, I add a "little" more nutella than the recipe suggests!!

GREAT CAKE! I make a variation on this that is a little different and a little cheaper (since you don't have to but a whole jar of nutella) if anyone would like to try it ive posted it on my profile. Otherwise GREAT CAKE!

Made this yesterday for the first time and I am well impressed! Definitely recommend stirring the Nutella straight after you 'blob' it on and don't blob too much at once either as it sinks to the bottom! Was surprised how easy it was to make given the lovely results! People who only saw a photo of my efforts have asked me for the recipe without having even tasted it.

As with a lot of others, the nutella in my cake sank straight to the bottom even though I used tiny spoonfuls. Still very tasty cake though!

I am that complete beginner this recipe is aimed at - i'm known for my non baking skills, so everyone was amazed (including me!) when I made this for my husbands birthday bbq. Could someone tell him that this cake should last a week - mind you he did say he had waited 33 years for an edible cake and wasn't going to save it. It's given me the confidence to 'have a go' at other recipes -thank you!
