  This cake is rich and delicious! Defiantly the taste of Autumn. However, I made a couple of changes. The icing is not sweet enough and needs icing sugar. The first batch i discarded and started again, missing out the brown sugar and swopping for icing sugar which I kept adding until I found the right balance. I added 100g of sultanas to the cake mix too.

  This is a fab cake, a great way to use up too many apples off the tree, tastes lovely and cooks well even with plain flour. I love the treacle icing, my son found it a bit of a strong taste so i'll try golden syrup next time

  enjoyed this cake will make again. I didn't have any walnuts in so used pecan and hazelnuts with the apples and it was yummy. Also used philly and icing sugar mix for sandwiching the cake together. Felt the icing give in recipe too sweet.

  This was delicious, but I made some changes. I replaced the walnuts in the mix with 50g of raisins soaked in brandy. I made the icing with maple syrup and decorated with walnuts. There was also too much mixture for 2 tins, so mine is a 3-layer cake. Yummy though and one to repeat.

  This cake was yummy and easy. I used molasses instead of black treacle for the icing, it was a bit runny, but still nice. If anyone's tried the cake un-iced, what was it like?

  Really nice recipe. Made this for a pudding for friends- everyone loved it. I liked the addtion of the treacle in the icing-a bit different from the usual butter cream which can be too sweet. Have already added this to my list to make again.

  Tried the icing alone with low fat cheese but it was runny and not sweet enough. I did not realise the importance of full fat over low fat cheese.

  Should also add, I made it in a single tin and didn't bother icing it. I don't need the extra sweetness that the icing would bring.

  I had some apples out of a friend's garden so decided to make this recipe, I made this into cupcakes, using the icing for them top of them, so that I could take them to our local pub for the quiz night. Thought they would be easier to serve than a large cake. I added a few sultanas to the cake mix. I didn't have any treacle in so used some golden syrup instead. I also added a little icing sugar as I didn't feel the topping was sweet enough, it was a bit tangy from the soft cheese. Despite the quiz only being very quiet this week, all 24 cakes were demolished with some people having more than one. Everyone loved them, commenting that they weren't too sweet - just right. Apparently they go really well with beer!

  this cake is so easy to make mine turned out brilliantly. So moist and light. The icing was awesome....lovely flavour...tasted of autumn....brilliant recipe would definately make again.

  I have just made my second apple and walnut cake because the whole family loves it. It is so easy to make. I have loads of cooking apples in my garden so I will be make one or two for freezing. Well done.

  Yuk! Made this last week and followed recipe to the letter but did not enjoy it and gave the rest to the hens! Definitely better cake recipes on the site. I don't think the rapeseed oil enhances it at all.
