  Alone a little bit tasteless, but with the blackberry compote it's simply great.

  It rose just a little, but you can use baking powder (1 tsp).

  After reading the suggestion , I thought I would follow Jane Hornby scones recipe , as this recipe never fails , I used two apples med sizes ....what a treat didn't last long once they were out of the oven yummmmmmmmmm

  To Sarah- -I would add an egg and less milk which would help the rise, I put at least 1 egg in all my oven scones. I think this recipe would benefit from it. Try again, I'm sure you will succeed--Good luck.

  Mine didn't rise either, they spread out into wider circles instead! I felt they were too soft though, put all the milk in and it was gooey. Added extra flour until I could handle the dough. Nonetheless they still tasted great, I normally struggle with scones, but these were lovely and light and i will definitely use this recipe again. I used 2 small apples. Grated 1 and diced the other. Will try baking powder and deeper rounds next time.

  I made these for friends and they were hugely popular - everyone gobbled them up and raved about them. I used 2 apples, diced slightly smaller than 1cm and served them with the blackberry compote aswell, which I made with lime instead of lemon juice and they were delish!!! A definite keeper and am not sure why other users didn't experience the same success as I did!

  good - defo need the blackberry compote with them though. Mine also didn't rise a huge amount but didn't taste stodgy so I guess that doesn't matter so much?

  I used a large cooking apple, and they where delicious! I don't bother with the cream and jam either, i just eat them whole :D Oh and the kids LOVE them!!!

  If you want s cones to rise don't use all that sugar.And add a egg and a pinch of salt.

  As a scone making virgin I took the advice above into account before baking. I used 1tsp of baking powder, an egg and a pinch of salt, along with slightly less sugar. No cutter in the kitchen so I split the round into 8 triangles and in they went. I have to say they are better than anything I have ever bought, so light and full of flavour. I am excited to try other "fillings" now and will keep the recipe the same as this time.

  Mine rose perfectly without making any adjustments - except that I put the flour & butter in a food processor to do the hard work! They taste delicious - will have to make double (or possibly treble) next time!

  Mine didn't rise either. They are however still delicious and fit beautifully in the toaster for the kids breakfast. Will try an egg and baking powder and report back.

  Followed nanajan's advice of 6th Sept 2011 re the recipe and they turned out super. The blackberry compote was a great addition!

  They tasted like normal scones to me! Nice texture but I woud use 2 apples instead of 1 next time, I'd also add salt and probably double the cinammon as I couldn't taste it. I made mine mini so didn't notice at first that they didn't rise but would see that actually they didn't after reading the above comments.

  I've made these twice now, followed the recipe exactly (but doubled second time) and they went down a storm with hubby and friends. I used a cooking apple and skimmed milk and handled the dough, which is quite wet, as little as possible. They rose as much as I would expect and tasted lovely.
