Method

  1. Preheat oven to fan 180C/conventional 200C/gas 6. Unroll the pastry onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out to 40 x 32cm. Spread a layer of pasta sauce over it, leaving a 1cm border around the edges. Arrange the ham evenly on top, then scatter the grated cheese over.
  2. Starting at one of the short ends, roll the pastry up as tightly as possible. Chill in the fridge for 10 minutes or so.
  3. Take a very sharp knife and cut the roll into 12 equal slices, laying them flat on 2 non-stick baking trays as you go. Brush each pinwheel lightly with beaten egg and sprinkle over the herbs. Bake for 12-15 minutes until puffed and golden. Leave to stand for 5-10 minutes before serving.

I made these with some children at school as part of a small group baking session. They loved doing them, they looked fab and turned out just as the photo. Brilliant!!

These are very easy to make and delicious. I did them as a starter for an Italian style dinner party. I didn't need all of it so I left the rest in the fridge until then next day and had it with my lunch!

I've made these with Marmite and cheese which were just so nice but haven't made these yet. We also came up with pesto and parmesan or chocolate spread or maybe crushed pistachios and honey as alternatives.

I had taken out a pack of puff pastry and not used it for the coffee morning I hosted, so when I found this recipe I decided to use it for the kid's tea. So glad I stumbled across this recipe, these where delicious! Rather than ham I chopped up some cooked chicken and added some sweetcorn - but you could put anything on them. I will be making these a lot!
