  • 50g porridge oats
  • 350ml milk or water, or a mixture of the two
  • Greek yogurt, thinned with a little milk and clear honey, to serve

  1. Put the oats in a saucepan, pour in the milk or water and sprinkle in a pinch of salt. Bring to the boil and simmer for 4-5 minutes, stirring from time to time and watching carefully that it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Or you can try this in a microwave. Mix the oats, milk or water and a pinch of salt in a large microwaveproof bowl, then microwave on High for 5 minutes, stirring halfway through. Leave to stand for 2 minutes before eating.
  2. To serve. Pour into bowls, spoon yogurt on top and drizzle with honey.

This is lovely, but seems like a lot of porridge for one person- you may have to play around with the quantities.

Soak your porridge in water overnight if possible, they cook quicker and taste creamier.

I used 250ml of water and and 100ml of milk and it made the porridge just right for me(and less calories than using all milk)! I added golden syrup as i ran out of honey and half a banana. Not too bad if you ask me.

I think a lot of people are missing the point when they add things like brown sugar, apricots and bananas to the porridge. You're missing the subtle flavour of the oats when you mask it with sweeteners like these.

This is by far the best way to make porridge, and the whole process only takes a few minutes:

1. Don't use Rolled Oats!! They turn into mush. Use proper ground oatmeal (or steel-cut if you can wait for 20 mins :))

2. Ratio is 2 or 3 parts water to 1 part oatmeal (your preference)

3. Boil the water with 1/2 tsp salt.

4. Add oatmeal to water slowly, while stirring - this avoids clumps

5. Remove from heat and cover - there is enough heat left in the pot to finish up. Stir occasionally until the water has boiled off, then transfer to bowls - you'll know the consistency :)

6. Add a light splash of COLD milk and optionally, a light sprinkle of salt to taste.

7. Enjoy - this is the traditional and by far the best way to eat porridge!

I am guessing that the calorie count is based on making it with water - although even then is isn't quite right. (Too many calorie counts just aren't very accurate - or compromise by making out that the dish is going to serve loads more people than it does.)
Anyway - I'm a recent porridge convert and am going to be trying all these great ideas. A friend is making her's with almond milk which is on my options list.

Not bad but would be PERFECT if made with proper scottish oatmeal instead of pappy oatflakes. make up the scottish oatmeal in the same quantities as the recipe above except soak the oatmeal overnight in the liquid and then simmer on the hob as per recipe (I don't know if it would work in the microwave though). If you have never tried pinhead oatmeal or medium oatmeal you really really should give it a go!

Definetly porridge cooked with water and a pinch of salt and then served with one 1/2 milk and one 1/2 cream

Sounds dull but proper scottish way to have it!

Calorie calcultaion is very inaccurate.

350 ml of milk contains around 175 calories on it's own

I've never been a huge fan of porrige - I struggle to eat an entire bowl. But when I added the natural yoghurt and honey it made a huge difference! I used skimmed milk

tastes lovely!

isn't the calorie count completely off though? i use normal oat flakes and their calorie count (for 50g) alone is 180. add the milk (1.5%) it's 370, not 175. or are these some special oat flakes?

@DAJAZDJ Salt is very traditional in porridge, in fact using salt in porridge is probably older than cornflakes - you should look at the ingredients on your cornflakes; they already have salt added.

I ve started using fruit juice instead of water. My favourite is cranberry juice with a handful of blueberries, you dont need any other sweetening.

Your all crazy just buy a flavoured multipack with around 10 sachets in.Put in a bowl add milk SUGAR and microwave for 2 mins.I am completely stunned most of you commenters are saying use salt whats that about would you put salt on your cornflakes.The flavours are sweet like apple and blueberry and honey and almond it needs sugar most definately not ever ever SALT wtf is going on salt on poridge unbelieveable i never head such rubbish what do you put on you chips sugar?.

Hiya, what I do for porridge is get a bag of fruit and nuts and mix it with the dry porridge mixture stored in a jar or canister beforehand and then put a dishful out and cover with boiling water. Quick and simple with all the goodness.

I like basic porridge but I've tried several recipes over many years and enjoyed many of them, however I thought I'd submit this one of my own.
As an experiment one evening, some years ago, when I wanted some porridge, but something different, I decided to make basic porridge and add some cheddar. What a difference!
The amount and variety of cheese is optional, but it is well worth a try.
All I do is put the dry porridge into a 'microwave' bowl with water and add choped up pieces of cheese, stir and microwave

Where is the mentioning of a 'pinch of salt' in the listing of ingredients? Agreed, a pinch is not much (!), but it's still an ingredient! Get it right!
