Method

  1. Cook the potatoes and swede in boiling water until tender (about 20 minutes).
  2. Preheat the oven to 190C/gas 5/fan 170C.While the potatoes and swede cook, put the soft cheese and stock into a large saucepan and heat gently, stirring with a wooden spoon, until blended and smooth. Now add the blended cornflour and cook until thick.
  3. Stir the fish into the sauce with the prawns and parsley. Season with some pepper.
  4. Tip the mixture into a 1.5 litre/2¾ pint baking dish. Drain the potatoes and swede, mash them well and season with black pepper. Spoon the mash over the fish to cover it completely. Bake for 25-30 minutes until piping hot, then transfer to a hot grill for a few minutes to brown the top. Serve with frozen peas or sweetcorn.

Making it budget

For an economical version, add frozen peas and sliced mushrooms to the sauce instead of the prawns.

Making it special

Make a really special version by using salmon instead of cod and frozen seafood cocktail instead of the prawns.

Not so low fat, if you don't have enough soft cheese and use double cream instead. Added peas and mushrooms, as well as the prawns, which made it a really filling meal. Really yummy.

Perfect comfort food, but virtuous too! I usually make it with a mashed potato topping as we're not keen on swede.

What a great midweek meal for all the family! I Didn't use low fat soft cheese though. The kids loved it. Also what a fantastic way to get the more of the 5 of a day in by using Swede and Potato for the Mash topping! Big Thumbs up from me!

Great midweek meal. I added mushrooms, frozen peas and a small tub of single cream! Used sweet potatoes with good old maris piper - which everyone loved. I would definitely make this again.

Lovely flavour, little more runny than we would have liked: probably because potatoes & swedes were boiled too long.

I added creme fraiche instead of half the soft cheese and chucked a load of white wine in there too. For a rare fish cooker I was in complete awe that it turned out so nicely. Definitely a winner for a dinner party :o)

A real hit - YUMMY! Wasn't sure it was going to work out but followed the recipe fully and it was great. The sauce was very tasty and a nice consitency. Nice to have a low fat meal that didn't taste like one - worked out as only 6.5 points on Weight Watchers! My husband who is not a great fish fan also loved it so will do again.

This is a great recipe and, as Jo points out, genuinely low-fat with only 6.5 WW points! I have made it a couple of times for entertaining and have been asked for the recipe. I've done it with half smoked fish and half none-smoked fish for a lovely smokey flavour. Also I didn't have any flavoured soft cheese so added my own herbs which worked well. Also not too long-winded for a week night and you can prepare quite a bit in advance, just do the sauce and assemble on the day.

Excellent! Very easy to make and delicious too. I made this the day before I needed it for an elderly persons birthday lunch. I adapted the recipe slightly - i bought a fish pie selection pack fresh from Sainsbury's and added a pack of seafood assortment.

We used this as a base and messed around with it - salmon steaks instead of cod, and spicy sweet potato mash instead of swede. It was devine!
