Method

  1. Butter the inside of a 1.2 litre pudding bowl and line the base with a disc of buttered greaseproof paper.
  2. Melt the butter, syrup and sugar in a saucepan. Remove from the heat and stir in the milk and egg. Add the cocoa to the flour, then tip this mixture into the pan with the cinnamon and soda.
  3. Pour the mixture into the pudding bowl, cover tightly with foil and steam for 11⁄4 hours. Just before the end, heat the sauce ingredients until melted, stirring all the time.
  4. Turn the pudding out (run a knife around the inside of the bowl if necessary) and discard the paper disc. Pour the sauce over the top and serve immediately.

So easy, all the family loved it. Needs the chocolate sauce or cream to enjoy it at its best.

I assume the steaming time is one and a quarter hours, or 1hr 15 minutes. At least that's what is said at the top of the recipe.

Vicky made this pudding and the italian tuna balls with spaghetti. We managed to find a plastic bowl with a lid which was just the right size to cook the pudding. We found it easy to make and to eat. We would make it agian.

A nice easy family pudding, not too rich and really easy to make. If you use a plastic pudding bowl and lid you don't need to bother with buttering or paper (get them from websites selling bowls for making christmas puddings). I used white chocolate for the sauce because that's what I had handy and it made a lovely creamy sauce and looked good against the dark pudding. A bit of orange zest might be a nice addition??

UN-BELIEVABLE! This is absolutely dreamy. I made double the quantity of of sauce (and made it with Dairy Milk chocolate as I am not a fan of dark chocolate). The sponge is so light and fluffy and the sauce is amazing. I did thicken it with a bit of cornflour and milk, but that's just personal preference. Will most definitely make it again.

I looked forward to trying this, because of the delicious-sounding mix of flavours. Having tried it, the cake was certainly tasty, but I'm not convinced that the spicy sponge and chocolate sauce go together that well. It's certainly interesting, I can see why it's a family favourite, although won't be mine. Next time, I'll try with orange liquer-soaked sultanas in the sponge, use light muscovado instead of dark, and use maya gold for the chocolate sauce.

Made this yesterday for pudding and it was really yummy. I did omit the cinnamon, only because I like my choc cakes/deserts to be uncomplicated. My first experience of steaming a pudding and I don't think that it will be my last. Delish.
