Method

  1. Heat the oven to 240C/fan 220C/gas 9. Sift the dry ingredients together in a bowl. Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk. Using your hand stir the milk into the mixture starting at the centre. You want a soft but not too sticky or wet dough.
  2. Turn the dough onto a floured worktop. Knead gently and pat into a round shape. Cut a cross into the top about 2.5cm deep.
  3. Bake for 15 minutes on a lower shelf and then reduce the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6 for about 30 minutes or till the bottom of the bread sounds hollow when tapped.

Scones

Make this into scones if you prefer - cook for 20 minutes only. Soda bread is best eaten the day it is made, or toasted the next day.

    I changed the recipe a little: I used 250 g white flour and 200 g wholewheat flour. Everything else was according to the recipe. The result was surprisingly good. I didn't think that one can prepare bread so easily. My boyfriend is very satisfied with it, I will use more (2 tsp) salt next time.

    Hi had no buttermilk, so used yogurt (pouring yogurt actually from Danone) with milk also used half white/half wholemal flour. Tasted delicious and I think my Irish grandmothers would be very proud of me!!!

    This is the second Soda bread recipe I have tried and both have been a bit wet and sticky, but with the addition of a little extra flour all was well. I live in France and sometimes one has to make allowances for the French flour. The loaf came out beautifully, good texture with a lovely golden crust, very tasty. I'll definitely be doing this recipe again and might make the scones with sultanas next time as well.

    This is a very easy bread to make and the feedback from friends was very positive. It is one of the best tasting soda breads we have had. Next time I will reduce the amount of salt by just a tad bit.

    Great soda bread! I added a tablespoon of honey and used half wholemeal flour, half white flour. One to make again and again.

    I have made this bread several times and it always turns out really nice. So easy to make and tastes great just out of the oven. I usually use one 284ml pot of buttermilk and the remaining 116ml milk so I don't have to open another pot of buttermilk. One of my favourite bread recipes.

    Lovely, quick, easy recipe. I find it hard to get buttermilk in the UK but used lemon juice to activate the soda instead (along with regular milk) and works just fine. Have added sultanas to make scones/a sweeter loaf a few times too. Already able to make this without having to follow the recipe, which is a good sign!
