Method

  1. Heat a knob of butter in a small pan then cook the garlic and chilli (if using) for 2 minutes. Add the stock, bring to a boil then reduce by 3/4. Whisk in the crème fraîche then stir in the parmesan to make a sauce. Keep warm on a low heat.
  2. Cook the broccoli in a large pan of boiling salted water until just tender. Scoop out the pan with a slotted spoon or tongs and drain. Add the gnocchi to the same boiling water and cook following pack instructions. Drain. Toss the gnocchi and broccoli with the sauce and serve in warmed bowls.

We swapped natural yoghurt and cream for the creme fraiche, and it was great

I'd rather stick to cream. You can also make the gnocci yourself. It takes a little more time and work but is sure worth it.

The original recipe is easier and healthier! Just cook the broccoli, put in the pan with garlic chilly flakes for a couple of minute then put the pasta and 100g or 150g of Parmesan, mix it well and it will all go creamy.. no need of creme! Look for a pasta called orecchiete, small ears in italian!!

Ok... this was the first time I'd tried Gnocchi and I have to say, I was not impressed, it's put me off ever trying it again! Sauce was ok, made it with cream but I think I over did it with the garlic, best bit was the broccoli!

The recipe sounds lovely but can I point out that Parmesan cheese is NOT vegetarian. it's is one of a few cheeses that is never vegetarian and you cannot buy vegetarian versions of parmesan. it contains animal rennet taken from the stomach of calves. This comment is being made to help people who might be hosting a vegetarian for dinner and do not want to be embarrassed when their guest cannot eat the dish. I'm disappointed that BBC Food have included this in their pages of veggie food. It causes confusion amongst restaurants, caterers and the public. Please would you not publish dishes containing Parmesan as 'vegetarian'

Tried this today with shop bought Gnocchi and added the parmesan at the last minute. We really enjoyed it! The recipe for the sauce is perfect, didn't need extra seasoning.

Couldn't agree more with LouLou. Parmesan is the bane of any strict vegetarians life. There is however an alternative, it's called 'not just a pasta cheese'. I suggest you google it. I do sympathise with non vegetarians who do try hard to accommodate their veggie friends. Recipes like this don't help!

My kids loved this recipe, especially the sauce. Was very easy to make and didn't need any additional seasoning. Will be a regular meal on our house.

Yet another non-vegetarian recipe in the so-called 'vegetarian' section. I am ready to scream. I have had this problem in so many restaurants that it's unbelievable. It is NOT EVEN LEGAL to describe a restaurant menu item as vegetarian when it is not, so please don't encourage these people by perpetuating the idea that enzymes extracted from the stomachs of slaughtered newly-born calves are vegetarian. i have found that many chefs actually do know that parmesan is made with these enzymes, but prefer to fool their customers for their own convenience - which is, of course, illegal. as for the rest of the chefs, how are they supposed to know any better when they are told on websites and by celebrity chefs that it is OK to put parmesan in so-called vegetarian dishes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh dear, I didn't know that about Parmesan and will avoid it in future. I am new to vegetarianism. Just didn't feel right eating meat any longer. What would be a good alternative? Will vegetarian cheeses be strong enough? Maybe just a sprinkling of black pepper would do??

This was truly delicious. My only comment is that for 2 greedy, hungry people 250gms gnocci would not be enough! Made it with a 500gm pack, and it served 3 very happy people.

Have not made this recipe yet, was looking for ideas and saw comments on PARMESAN. If you contact the Vegetarin Society they will send you free cards you can pass to chefs/restraunts advising them that Parmesan is not Vegetarian. If you are new to being Vegetarian check out their website www.vegsoc.org
