Ingredients

  • 250g pack unsalted butter
  • 300g golden caster sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs
  • 200g self-raising flour
  • 50g cocoa
  • 100g milk chocolate drops

For the topping

  • 85g butter
  • 85g caster sugar
  • 200g light condensed milk
  • 50g milk chocolate drops, plus extra, to scatter

Method

  1. Butter and line a traybake or small roasting tin, about 20 x 30cm. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Gently melt the butter in a large saucepan, cool for 5 mins, add sugar, vanilla and eggs, then beat until smooth with a wooden spoon. Stir in the flour, cocoa and ¼ tsp salt. Stir in the milk chocolate drops and bake for 35 mins until risen all over and a skewer comes out with a few damp crumbs.
  2. For the top, gently heat 85g butter and 85g caster sugar together until both are melted. Stir in 200g light condensed milk and bring to a boil. Cool for 5 mins, then stir in 50g milk chocolate drops to melt. Spread over the cold cake, scatter with more chocolate drops and cut into squares.

I didnt read the istuctions propperly an just threw all the ingreadents for the base in at once on to the melted butter , still turnned out perfect :) plus i used milkyway stars instead of choc drops . Possibly the sweetest thing i have ever eaten. 5/5

Really nice chocolate cake recipe. Don't be scared by comments about the icing - it works perfectly and tastes great. You just need to keep an eye on the condensed milk and sugar mix while bringing it to the boil, stirring constantly. Make sure you slowly bring it to a hard boil, and continue to boil it for a minute or so, in order for it to thicken up before adding the chocolate.

started to burn around edges so next time i would lower heat slightly, the topping was very runny so i placed in the fridge for a while to thicken up, which it did but not as much as i would have liked it to, i also sliced the cake in half and added jam so it wasnt so dry, very nice but sweet and fattening !

this is yummy - the icing is too much for the whole cake i found but very mourish - my work colleague said it was the best cake he has ever tasted.

I thinking of making this cake because of all the fanatstic reveiws it got. but after my disaster making the naughty chocolate fudge cake, i have to be certain that this cake will not only work but will taste gorgeus. so if anyone has any extra tips please tell me.

Really lovely cake, but mine didn't quite cook through in the middle. All the chocolate had sunk to the bottom and it was a little soggy. I couldn't find light condensed milk, so used full fat. The topping was suitably gooey and sticky. Lovely!

The recipe for the sponge mix is really easy however i had problems with the icing. Luckily I had enough ingredients to try a second batch. I think the trick is to keep it on a low heat and just keep stirring until it boils. It takes a while but is worth the wait - don't get distracted by anything or it will end up burnt! The end result was delicious - yummy!!!!

Lovely cake. I used chopped up cadburys buttons in the cake which were really nice although I did find the cake a bit dry. I couldn't get the topping right at all - mine ended up really runny and I found it to be very sugary. I'll make them again but probably not the topping and will add walnuts to make them more like brownies.

Thought this was great - have been looking for a nice chocolate cake mix and this one just hit the spot. Really chocolatey and slightly dense and sticky. The icing was also fab - though I did feel I might have to drive myself to the local cardiac unit when I saw how much butter and sugar (not to mention the condensed Mil) was in the whole thing. Still, what a way to go!!

nice easy recipe for the cake, but I also had problems with the icing. Mine also burnt when I put in the condensed milk, so I had lots of brown bits from the bottom and corners of the pan mixed in - thought it would have to go in the bin, but actually once I had let it cool and mixed in the chocolate it was ok and you could hardly see any of the burnt bits, and it didn't taste burnt either. Bit odd really!;)

Cake very nice - couldnt get the Topping to loo quite like the picture but it was still very nice and very easy to make.

Very easy to make, although super calorific! Also made a mess of the topping. Melted the sugar and butter and then added the condensed milk and could not have been away from the pan more than 30 seconds and it had burnt :( At that stage, I had run out of caster sugar so I heated up the leftover condensed milk and melted in the choc drops and it was fine.
