Ingredients

  • 400g lean pork mince
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped or grated
  • 85g fresh white breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped dill, plus extra to serve
  • 1 tbsp each olive oil and butter
  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • 400ml hot beef stock (from a cube is fine)

Method

  1. In a bowl, mix the mince with the egg, onion, breadcrumbs, dill and seasoning. Form into small meatballs about the size of walnuts – you should get about 20.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan and brown the meatballs. You may have to do this in 2 batches. Remove from pan, melt the butter, then sprinkle over the flour and stir well. Cook for 2 mins, then slowly whisk in the stock. Keep whisking until it is a thick gravy, then return the meatballs to the pan and heat through. Sprinkle with dill and serve with cranberry jelly, greens and mash.

Much, much better than Ikea meatballs - the dill changes everything, and that gravy is amazing.

I cooked this recipe for the first time tonight and it worked out beautifully. I didn't follow it exactly, used 500g of mince and probably more butter and flour for the gravy but it turned out great.

I oven baked the meatballs for 20 minutes, much less hassle than pan frying and means they keep their shape nicely. Added a couple of tbsp of Redcurrant jelly to the sauce which gave it a lovely sweetness. Clean plates from adults and children alike.

Love this recipe! Added cream for extra indulgence, garlic and chillies for extra flavour :) If you have no dill, fresh thyme also works really well.

My daughter wouldn't eat the meatballs from the 'furniture shop' after my son told her they were made from reindeer meat! It's nice to be able to indulge again with visibly not reindeer meat. I use a beef and pork mix, and add a tablespoon of light cream to the gravy before serving - lush!

It´s only in southern Sweden you use pork and dill.
In the rest of the country we eat beef meatballs with boiled potatoes, creamsauce based on gravy, pickled cucumber and jam from lingonberries. Trust me, I´m Swedish.

these meatballs were so yummy very ikea I did add a teaspoon of bovril just to give it a bit more of a meaty taste, they went down really well with the family and I will definately be making them again

This is nothing like an authentic Svensk meatball. All spice and ginger are key as well as a little finely chopped onion, cdertainly not a whole one!

Fantastic . Left out the dill and used mixed dred Italian herbs in the meatballs . Kids said it was worth 20 out of 10.

Nice, but needed a little something extra, garlic maybe? Not really bothered about the authenticity of it, just need more of an indepth taste.
