Method

  1. Mix the flour in a bowl with 2 tsp salt and the yeast. Make a well, add the water and oil then mix to a rough dough. Leave it to sit for 5 mins as it is. Flour the work surface and hands, then knead the dough for 1-2 mins until smooth and springy. Leave it to sit for 10 mins in a warm place, covered with oiled clingfilm. Don't worry about waiting for it to double in size.
  2. Cut the dough in to 8 even pieces, roll each one out into a thin circle. Spoon 1 tsp mango chutney into the middle of the circle, then fold one side over to make a semi-circle shape. Press the edges together. Heat the grill to high. Dust a baking sheet with flour, then grill the breads for 1 ½-2 mins on each side until puffed and golden. You'll need to do this in a few batches. Serve with the curry.

Dough know-how

Letting the dough sit after mixing the liquid into the dry dramatically cuts the time it takes to knead.

I made these last night and was very pleased - i've been looking at other recipes and couldn't face spending hours making them. This recipe is super easy and i'd definitely make them again. :)

This could have been so lovely! Made it on the same day that I made a fresh loaf so I know it isn't my bread making skills, but it was just a big gloopy mess of dough - however much flour I added to try and make it workable it just didn't seem to make any difference. The result was thick stodgy rolls which just tasted of dough. Will stick to my usual naan bread recipe in future!

Good simple recipe. Mine didn't turn out like a 'proper' naan. But yummy nonetheless and will definately do again, I'm looking forward to trying with garlic and oil and also with corriander (if that works!)

I doubled the recipe as I was making it for 10 people. Had the same problem as Travelbunny in that it turned out to be a gloopy mess. Not happy. :-(

Took on board previous comments and added water slowly so turned out okay, when kneading added finely chopped coriander, garlic and chilli until well incorporated, then rolled out and grilled. Used Mango as one of 3 dips. Had for starter before chicken madras, veg curry and pilau rice. Fed lots of hungry men who were full of praise.

These were delicious and I would definitely make them again! I really enjoy mango chutney so I filled the naans with a bit extra. Very easy, though watch the baking paper being so close to the grill!

These were great, I melted some butter, added freshly crushed garlic and brushed it on top of the naan, then I sprinkled a bit of chopped coriander on top. I left out the chutney and it was so nice. Much nicer than shop bought.
