Which vodka?

You can happily use unbranded vodka for this as the cranberries provide the main bittersweet flavour.

I have made this the last 2 years and given to friends as Christmas presents. They all return the bottles and ask for refills next year! Just bought the cranberries for this years batch! Makes thinking what to get people really easy when they tell you what they want. I just use the cheapest unbranded vodka I can find and it's delicious.

i did this one with icing sugar and put in blackberries, raspberries and cherries (pricked). it is bit sweet so i've added an extra 150mls vodka. Not sure if it'll last long enough to be given away

Tried as recommended with excellent results. Really easy to make and is a great gift as most people have no idea how to make it... Also tried with different fruits / booze which also seems to work although I would not recommend mixing more than one fruit. My personal recommendation is to use less sugar (100 to 120g depending on the sweetness of fruit) and to cut up the fruit into little pieces to get the most of it. My favourate recipe is raspberry gin... great but very addictive...

Excellent, though I used 150g caster sugar. BTW As with sloes, if you freeze the cranberries first you don't need to prick them. The vodka hitting the cold fruit induces "temperature shock".

We made it to give as presents, but at the rate we've been drinking it I've had to go out and buy more cranberries and vodka.

I have some dried cranberries. Can they be used instead or does the fruit have to be fresh/frozen?

So.... what's the best way to sterilise the kilner jar?? Normally I just wash in warm soapy water then dry off in the oven. But I suspect that if I did this then poured room temp vodka in to the jar it may crack?? Can I allow the jar to cool down and it would still be sterile?? Or could I warm the vodka up slightly? Or is it better to use a sterilising fluid or something?? Sorry if this is a daft question but any help would be good - desperate to make this! :)

hi there , i do not believe that it is necessary to sterelise the jar , a good wash and dry will be perfectly ok as you are then adding alcohol...i too will make this tomorrow ..seems really drinkable , can't wait to try

Have just decanted mine into some pretty bottles. I was worried at first that the cranberries I'd bought weren't up to the task because they didn't seem to be colouring the vodka in the slightest....but after a few days the vodka was a deep dusky pink and now, after a couple of weeks, the colour is just phenomenal. I've only had the smallest snifter so far but it has a superb fruity twang without being overpowering. Most impressed!

Hi does anyone know if you have to use kilner jars or can you just sterilise and use any jar?

Hi I have used toffee jars from the newsagent, just make sure that the bottoms are not bashed or cracked at all.

Sterilising jars I find is best done in a dishwasher or just hot soapy water, rinsed and dried in an oven for a few minutes

Hi, does it have to be left for 2 weeks, or would a couple of days be enough if I left the cranberries in the Vodka? I just found this recipe and I'd really like to make it for a friend for Christmas ... thanks :)
