What's in season: September
Blackberries
Bursting with a sweet-sour flavour, blackberries can be found in many a British hedgerow. Choose the biggest, plumpest looking berries - and don't wear white, the dark, sticky juice will leave you with a lasting reminder of the day you picked your own
-
Pak choi
A stir-fry wouldn't be the same without leafy pak choi, but you could also use it to accompany your Sunday roast instead of cabbage or cauli. Look for crisp, white stems and dark green leaves when buying.
-
Beetroot
Banish memories of vinegary school beetroot, this nutritious and largely calorie-free root veg is both flavoursome and versatile. Buy it in a bunch, serve roasted, in a soup or shredded into a salad.
-
Tomatoes
British tomatoes are at their peak in September, bursting with flavour and really worth eating. Slice up and serve with a creamy mozzarella, or roast slowly to make a sweet, smoky pasta sauce.
