Bowl of quinces

What's in season: November

Quince

These bright yellow fruit turn a delicate pink when cooked slowly in sugar. One of the simplest recipes to try is tangy quince jam. It's delicious with hot, buttered toast, or alongside a wedge of mature cheddar.

  • Cavolo nero

For an unassuming British cabbage, cavolo nero - literally 'black cabbage' has become popular in recent years. Cook it like cabbage and finish with a gloss of butter, or toss with bacon for a hearty side.

  • Figs

Soft, plump figs range from purplish to green, with ruby-red or salmon-pink flesh inside. Their delicate taste and texture is at its best when served hot with honey, or simply quartered with slices of smoky prosciutto.
