James Martin

Chef and TV presenter James is a man of many talents, from cooking up a storm in the kitchen to strutting his stuff on the dancefloor

James grew up in a farmhouse in Yorkshire and was influenced by his father's job as catering manager at stately home Castle Howard. The work he did with his father meant that by the time he was 12, James had already cooked for the Queen Mother.

At 16 James started his formal training at Scarborough Technical College where he was Student of the Year for three years running. His talent was spotted by Antony Worrall Thompson who bought James to London to work in the kitchen of 190 Queensgate and later dell'Ugo. After touring France working in the kitchens of old chateaux he moved to Winchester and at just 21 he became head Chef at the Hotel and Bistro du Vin.

Stepping out

Now a regular on Ready Steady Cook and presenter of Saturday Kitchen Live, James is a well-known face on TV and has written several cook books. Last year he stepped out of the kitchen and competed in Strictly Come Dancing on BBC 1 managing to salsa his way into the semi-finals.
