Gordon Ramsay
The cream of the chef's crop and Good Food contributor is arguably the best known, and respected, British chef in the world
It's hard to imagine now, but Scottish-born Gordon did not always seem destined for cooking greatness. At the age of 15 he was signed as a professional football player to Glasgow Rangers. His love of football and talent at the game gave him his first career break, but three years later he decided to return to college and complete an HND in hotel management.
After finishing his HND he moved to London and joined Marco Pierre White at Harvey's. A few years later he moved on to work at Le Gavroche alongside Albert Roux before moving to France for three years to hone his skills in French cooking.
Reach for the stars
In the years that followed, Gordon's career took off. Between 1993 and 2003 Gordon had five books published. He won two Michelin stars for his work as head chef at new restaurant Aubergine, opened his first restaurant Gordon Ramsay, and a year later opened his second, Pétrus with his protégé Marcus Waring as Chef Patron. Within seven months this too had been awarded a Michelin star.
The awards continued to roll in and in 2000 Gordon was awarded The Chef of the Year Award at the Cateys, Gordon Ramsay was voted Top Restaurant in the UK in the London Zagat Survey and was named as best Fine Dining Restaurant in Harden's Guide. 2001 saw Gordon Ramsay gain its third Michelin star and the opening of Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's, which won a Michelin star two years later.
In 2002 Gordon put one of his protégées Angela Hartnett at the head of his new project at The Connaught Hotel and her menu won its first star in 2004. Gordon has also relaunched The Savoy Grill with Marcus Waring and opened Boxwood Café at The Berkeley.
From kitchens to cameras
After his success in restaurants and with an ever increasing popularity with people from all walks of life, Gordon was further catapulted into the public eye with a range of successful TV programmes including Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, Hell's Kitchen (UK and USA versions) and The F Word. More books followed and in 2005 Gordon was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours list.
2006 has seen the opening of two more London restaurants, Maze and La Noisette, and a host of others in countries including America and Japan. Gordon has also launched a range of products for Royal Doulton.
With eight Michelin stars to his name, successful restaurants around the world and a host of TV shows, Gordon Ramsay is certainly a master at what he does. As they say, the proof is in the pudding.
