Gary Rhodes

With his reputation for perfecting classic dishes, Gary is a fine ambassador of British food.

Gary Grew up in Gillingham in Kent and used to experiment in the kitchen while his mother went to work. His family's positive feedback spurred his love of cooking and he decided to go to Thanet Technical College to train as a chef.

While at college Gary realised that travel would assist his development as a chef so he headed to Europe to gain experience. His first job was at the Amsterdam Hilton as commis chef where he experimented with nouvelle cuisine and started to think about how food was prepared.

Returning to England Gary had a run of successful roles, his most prominent was working as head chef at the Castle Hotel in Taunton where he retained the hotel's Michelin star aged just 26.

Spreading his talent

In 1997 he opened his first restaurant City Rhodes and soon after opened Rhodes in the Square. Both were awarded Michelin stars. To make his food more affordable and accessible he opened Rhodes & Co. brasseries in Manchester, Edinburgh and Crawley which were awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award for good food at a moderate price.

Gary has cooked on almost every continent and for a variety of people from royalty, to presidents, to his beloved Manchester United Football Club. He is a popular TV chef having appeared numerous TV shows since 1988 including Masterchef and Hell's Kitchen and more restaurants are planned for the future.

In 2006 Gary was awarded an OBE in the Queen's birthday honours list.
