Close-up of a wine cork

Corked

Pronounce it: core-k'd

Wine can be faulty for a number of reasons, for example if air has seeped into the bottle the wine can become 'oxidised' and taste of sherry.

In the case of 'corked' wine, a contaminated cork is the culprit, which creates a mouldy, musty smell and / or taste, a little like a dank cellar or soggy cardboard. You can't tell if if your wine is corked by just looking - you've got to taste it or sniff it. If a wine is corked or otherwise faulty, return it and ask for a replacement.
