Top 10 Christmas crackers

Posted at , 05 December 2012 by Sarah Sysum - Assistant editor, Easy Cook magazine

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without crackers. Make sure your Christmas meal goes with a bang with Sarah Sysum's top 10...

1. Racing reindeer crackers

Forget the usual cracker contents, each cracker here contains a wind up reindeer, a joke and a hat. Get ready to race your reindeers around the included racetrack.

£17.99 for a box of 6, Lakeland

2. Trivia crackers

I like the modern design of these, which contain either trivia questions or charades that are guaranteed to get everybody out of the chair after dinner.

£17.50 for a box of 12, Debenhams

3. Gold crackers

These are a real bargain, if you are after quantity not quality. The gifts are your usual fare and the jokes are rubbish but they have a good snap and for this price who's complaining?

£1.00 for a box of 8, Poundland

4. Magic crackers

Not the most festive design but the magic tricks in each cracker make for a good talking point whilst entertaining the kids (and dad) as they work out how to do them.

£9.99 for a box of 8, Party Delights

5. Fill-your-own retro holly crackers

If you want something a bit more personal these are a good idea. They're 'do it yourself'. They come ready assembled with jokes and hats, you just add the gift.

£5 for a box of 5, John Lewis

6. Advent crackers

Count down to Christmas with these advent-themed crackers. Starting on December 1st you pull a cracker a day; inside each one you'll find a character from the nativity. Then, on Christmas Eve, you turn the box into a stable so you can recreate the scene in 3D.

£7.99 for a box of 24, Lakeland

7. Rather large Christmas cracker

I'm not going to pretend this isn't expensive but its size is immense! The biggest cracker we have EVER seen. Contents include 40 large chocolates (alcoholic chocolates are clearly labelled if you've got the whole family around), 12 hats plus an assortment of jokes.

£38.00 for giant cracker, Hotel Chocolat

8. Wine connoisseur crackers

If it's just the adults around the table then these make for a more grown up choice. Typical gifts inside include a bottle opener and wine pourer. I like the wine-inspired design too.

£25.00 for a box of 6, Waitrose

9. Tartan and tree crackers

I love the pretty traditional design of these. As well as decorating the tree you could use them to decorate presents instead of bows.

£3.97 for a box of 12, Tesco

10. Purple snowflake crackers

There's nothing fancy about these, they're just well made crackers (they snap really well) in a pretty snowflake design. You get the obligatory bad joke, paper hat and plastic cracker gift.

£4.00 for a box of 6, Matalan

Still not found a suitable cracker? Why not make your own?
