Eat like an athlete - Sharon Vennard

Posted at , 04 September 2012 by Roxanne Fisher - Writer/Sub-editor, bbcgoodfood.com

Sharon Vennard is part of the Team GB archery squad and will be making her mark on the Paralympics this summer. Here Sharon shares her favourite food indulgences and stresses the importance of following a balanced diet...

What is your typical daily diet when training for a big event?

Breakfast :
I would usually have some fresh fruit, orange juice and tea.

Lunch :
I have either a sandwich or, as a treat, a slice or two of pizza.

Dinner :
I don't have a set routine for dinner, just whatever takes my fancy at the time.

How do you keep your diet varied and do you ever get bored with eating for your sport?

I'm lucky that for archery, as long as my diet is balanced, I can eat most things so boredom isn't an issue - I just ensure I enjoy everything in moderation.

What super food/juice/meal helps you get out of bed and motivated on those particularly dreary mornings?

I really look forward to a glass of orange juice in the morning, though if I'm really struggling to get motivated, a cherry flavoured energy drink generally does the trick.

What's your trusted snack for an energy boost?

I find most cereal bars will hit the spot, and are a bit of a treat too. Bananas are also a trusted energy source for many athletes.

How do you stay hydrated when training?

Staying hydrated is so important for athletes in all disciplines. I ensure I have constant supply of water on hand to sip throughout the day and also keep sports drinks in my bag for an extra boost when needed.

When competition season is over what are your favourite food indulgences?

That would have to be burger and chips!

What would be your top diet and exercise tip for the amateur athlete?

A balanced diet is the most important thing. Also, don't suddenly start exercising a lot if that's not your normal routine, as you'll risk injury. Instead gradually build up to increased activity levels.

Aside from your speciality, what is your favourite sport/exercise?

I love to watch most sports but athletics and gymnastics are my favourite.
