Our healthy new year's resolutions...

Posted at , 04 January 2012 by Roxanne Fisher - Writer/Sub-editor, bbcgoodfood.com

Annually we make new year's resolutions in an attempt to start afresh and turn over a healthy new leaf. As eating a healthier diet tops the good intentions list for many this year we asked the team what healthy habits they'll be adopting in 2012...

I will...fill up on protein

Bbcgoodfood.com's food editor Caroline Hire is planning to curb sugar cravings after the festive season by filling up on healthy, protein-rich meals; ''Things tend to get a bit out of control with all the chocolates and desserts flying around at Christmas, so it's back on the wagon from January. I also intend to make sure I have protein with every meal as it keeps me full and stops me reaching for chocolate!''

I will make...healthier bakes

Good Food's deputy food editor, Sarah Cook will be trying out some sugar alternatives for healthier bakes in the new year; ''Refined sugar seems to be the big worry for the health conscious. I'm going to experiment with stevia, (a natural plant extract) which is dried so looks like icing sugar and also agave syrup - an ideal replacement for honey and golden syrup''

I will...eat less, more often

Bbcgoodfood.com's web assistant, Natalie Hardwick will be avoiding unhealthy snacking by eating regularly throughout the day; ''My new year's resolution is to stop eating three large meals a day and instead tuck into six smaller dishes, which is supposed to increase your metabolism and promote energy levels. A filling breakfast like porridge or eggs should help to keen me fuller for longer too.''

I will...say no to temptation

Easy Cook's editorial assistant, Lucy Netherton hopes banishing the booze will help her stick to a new healthy regime: ''In 2012 I plan to cut down on drinking alcohol, especially during January and February. December is a busy month for me, the Christmas parties and family celebrations are in full swing, and it can be hard to say no to a few festive cocktails! Not only will cutting back help me save calories and fat but it also helps me make better decisions about what I'm eating - I find it hard to refuse a tempting take away after a few drinks. It will also help me save money too, which after Christmas shopping is a necessity!''

Healthier takeaway options

I will... make sensible swaps

Good Food cookery assistant, Cassie Best intends to make simple swaps in her everyday diet to promote better health; ''I plan to lower my carbohydrate intake by swapping white pasta and bread for healthier wholegrains while also cutting down on saturated fats by replacing snacks like cakes and crisps for nutritious veggie sticks and smoothies.''

I will...learn a new recipe every month

Easy Cook's assistant editor, Sarah Sysum has a plan for making her healthy eating regime last all year; ''I intend to add one new 'favourite' healthy recipe to my repertoire each month and then continue to cook it for the rest of the year. By December I'll have 12 more recipes I can cook with confidence and won't be falling back on shepherd's pie... again!''

Open QuoteI love the idea about "every month one new recipe"! It took me 2 years to lose my pregnancy weight and get fit again, which is a challenge with a child. So my 2012 resolution is to keep on eating healthy, doing exercise and keeping my weight ... oh and a new recipe every month ;-)

Open QuoteIf you're tempted to eat something sweet after your dinner, give yourself permission but set the kitchen timer for 20 minutes. Usually, after 20 mins, your brain will have registerd the fact you've had enough to eat and you'll get your willpower back. It also helps to leave the room you've had dinner in or move away from the table.
