Good Food's best cookbooks of 2011

Posted at , 16 November 2011 by Lily Barclay - Writer, bbcgoodfood.com

It's every foodie's prerogative to have a library of well-thumbed cookbooks, but that doesn't make adding to a much-loved collection an easy job. A really good cookbook should be as soothing to read, as the recipes are to eat.

We've pored over our favourites to select the Good Food 2011 top 10 reads. From stunning photography to mouth-watering recipes these cookbooks offer everything from creativity to comfort.

The Good Cook by Simon Hopkinson (rrp £25)

"If you love classic flavour combinations, then this is the book for you. Enticingly photographed and easy to follow, look no further for the ultimate sticky toffee pudding, coq au vin, quiche Lorraine and risotto alla parmigiana. There's plenty for game lovers too with recipes for teal, pigeon, rabbit and quail".

Veggiestan by Sally Butcher (rrp £25)

"An inspiring collection of recipes for all your favourite vegetables - and some not so familiar. Veggiestan is an imaginary land created by aromatic and exciting Middle Eastern dishes by Sally Butcher, who runs a Persian food shop in Peckham, South London. Enchanting to read and cook from."

Elaine Stocks, deputy editor, BBC Good Food magazine.

One More Slice by Leila Lindholm (rrp £19.99)

"I really enjoyed her last book, pretty simple ideas and bakes, but love the Scandilicious slant at the moment."

Sarah Cook, deputy food editor, BBC Good Food magazine.

Primrose Bakery Book (rrp £17.99)

"Irresistible bakes adorn every page of this quirky and charming book - and it is packed full of simple recipes that give great results and look stunning - from croissants to cakes."

Roxanne Fisher, writer/sub-editor, bbcgoodfood.com.

Pieminster by Tristan Hogg and Jon Simon (rrp £17.99)

"Simply because it inspires me to do something special with simple ingredients. The instructions are effortless to follow and the whole book feels like chatting to a friend in the kitchen. Two of my favourites have to be the mulled wine-scented 'plumble' and the hearty sausage, cider and potato pie".

Ginger Pig Meat Book by Tim Wilson & Fran Warde (rrp £25)

"The wholesome, no nonsense cover is just what you want from a book about meat; reassuring and simple. Stuffed with selection notes, meat cut guides and month-by-month recipes, you'll be wearing a white coat, with a pencil behind your ear before you know it."

Hannah Williams, editor, bbcgoodfood.com.

Cooking with Coco by Anna Del Conte (rrp £18.99)

"Being a parent and an ex-chef I'm always looking for inspiration for great recipes to cook for, and with, my daughter. Anna is a fantastic cookery writer, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book of recipes that she cooked with her 12-year-old granddaughter. It didn't disappoint, these are proper recipes that the whole family can enjoy eating and cooking - not novelty 'kids food'."

Miette by Meg Ray with leslie Jonath (rrp £17.99)

"I want this book on my coffee table, my bookshelf, my bedside table. Honestly, I don't know when I'd ever get round to making anything from the little book from 'San Francisco's most charming pastry shop'... But the pages are scalloped edged. I mean, come on."

Sarah Cook, deputy food editor, BBC Good Food magazine.

Everyday Asian by Bill Granger (rrp £20)

"I'm a huge fan of Asian food and Bill Granger's easy to follow, quick recipes mean you can replicate your favourite flavours at home - even when you're pushed for time. It makes the perfect recipe book for those with a busy schedule".

Roxanne Fisher, writer/sub-editor, bbcgoodfood.com.

Spices by Sophie Grigson (rrp £20)

"This beautifully photographed book has simply got me reaching for the spice rack more often - Sophie Grigson explains the flavour of spices and what to pair them with in 90 recipes from all over the world."

Lily Barclay, writer, bbcgoodfood.com.

Open QuoteI swear by the Primrose Bakery recipes, they are fiddly but so delicious & utterly worth it. Pieminster is on my wish list & I was planning to get 'Miette' but I have heard there are some issues over measurements.

Open QuoteHugh F-W's Veg book is fab, a definite favourite in our house. I'm not a vegetarian by any means, but these recipes are good enough for me to go veggie for most of the week. Basics staples now include his magic dough, twice baked potatoes and so many more it would take too long to name them all!!
