My Life on a Plate: Gregg Wallace & John Torode

Posted at , 11 October 2011 by Hannah Williams - Editor, bbcgoodfood.com

MasterChef stars, Gregg Wallace and John Torode discuss their partnership, guilty pleasures and the problems with cling film...

John: My earliest food memory has to be walking through Nana's house and the smell of her making pelmini piroshki.

Gregg: Mine is my grandmother's roast lamb and her taking mint out from the garden to make mint sauce, which I still think is my favourite, favourite flavour combination.

John: Elizabeth David has been my biggest influence and in fact the other day I organised all my cookbooks and realised the majority of my cook books are written by females.
Gregg: It's got to be John. I've worked with him so much and all we talk about is food, for about six months a year for seven years - it's got to be John.

Gregg: If I was going to cook for John I would maybe make him a vegetarian meal with the freshest veg I could. I think that would impress him and I would want to impress him. Nothing complex would impress him because he's seen it all, he's done it all, but fresh, beautiful produce I think he would love.

John: I love pasties and I love sausage rolls - with tomato ketchup. I don't like biscuits very much.
Gregg: My guilty pleasure is butterscotch Angel Delight. Add milk, stir, put in the fridge. It's just delicious.

John: I like all jobs in the kitchen except for cleaning out the fridge; my own home fridge. I like cleaning out the cool fridge at the restaurant but not the home fridge.
Gregg: I hate ripping off cling film. I can never do it. I always rip it in half, rip a bit off, have some up my arm. I hate it.

John: I wouldn't want to do any other job in the world. In fact I have two jobs: MasterChef, and that's a job in itself, and I cook.
Gregg: I'd like to have been a professional rugby player or a history lecturer.

Gregg and John will be appearing at MasterChef Live at Olympia London from 11th - 13th November 2011.

Open QuoteI'm with Elaine on this one - but stretch it over the plate or whatever first, then set about it with the point of a sharp knife. Never fails, and gives you such a feeling of power over the dratted stuff.
