RIP my parents' much-loved toaster

Posted at , 25 February 2011 by Alison Bowles - Travel editor, olive magazine

For over 50 years, my parents' Macrini stainless steel toaster has faithfully made toast; until last Friday that is.

An ex-hotel workhorse, an inspired gadget inside it meant that whether it made two pieces of toast or 40, it maintained a steady heat so that all the pieces of bread inserted were evenly and similarly toasted. But now it's broken, Macrini don't seem to exist any longer and even my fix-it husband was unable to get it working.

It's only a toaster but it had become part of the family. My parents can't bear to be parted from it so now it lives in the loft, hopefully waiting for the day it can be mended.

Have any kitchen items become part of your family? Any tips for a worthy replacement??

Open QuoteAbout 20 years ago, a friend bought a snazzy chrome Dualit toaster. We all accused him of buying it just because it was a style icon. But as well as continuing to look as smart as it did two decades ago, it's also knocking out perfectly toast. He once had a brunch gathering for about 15 guests and I think that was the Dualit's finest hour!

Open QuoteMany years ago (over 30) I bought a Krupps mixer/blender for less than £20. It's still going strong and has seen off a food processor and a couple of hand blenders. An old friend always laughs when she sees I still have the mixer from our flat share days but it will be a sad day when it goes to the great mixer home in the sky.
