The top 10 of 2010

Posted at , 14 December 2010 by Andrea McGinniss - Editor, bbcgoodfood.com

It's that time of year, when we get all reflective, grab a cuppa and some cake (any excuse!), and look at what worked well, and not so well, on bbcgoodfood.com in 2010.

Happily, it's been an overwhelmingly positive year. Traffic to the site keeps climbing and your comments and ratings continue to make us feel warm and fuzzy. Hopes are high for an even better 2011.

We thought we'd celebrate with some 'best of' lists, highlighting the recipes you loved most this year, and will hopefully continue to cook long into the next decade.

First up, the big one. The 10 most popular recipes of 2010. If you haven't tried them already, you really must. But don't just take our word for it...

10. Tomato soup "My daughter is not a fan of soups, but really enjoyed this one. High praise indeed!" Marlene 24 August 2010

9. Banoffee pie "Quick and easy, and always a hit in my house. Special enough for a party!" Steph, 29 May 2010

8. Strawberry cheesecake in 4 easy steps "OMG! This cheesecake is AMAZING! Followed the recipe exactly and everyone loved it. Even the kids were saying it was the best cake they had ever tasted." Nic_Nac, 30 June 2010

7. Chicken cacciatore "Just simply; a really great dish!" Alilama, 10 November 2010

6. Carrot cake "Utterly gorgeous. Followed the recipe to a T and it turned out perfect. Will definitely be making this for my best friend's birthday cake." Tanyavoid, 27 October 2010

5. Yummy scrummy carrot cake "This is a family favourite and a big hit with everyone we have served it to. So moist and tasty and easy to make too." Mrs B, 6 November 2010

4. Chilli con carne "This is the best Chilli l have ever made it was so tasty. Will use this recipe for ever." Rita, 3 December 2010.

3. Lemon drizzle cake "Made this many times and it has been a complete hit everytime. Fabulously easy and foolproof." Tinkerbell, 25 April 2010

2. Best-ever brownies "This is a brilliant recipe. So good, in fact, that my colleagues keep putting in orders for them." Bunniston 4 December 2010

1. The ultimate chocolate cake "My guests were wowed by it and spent the next few days raving about it to everyone." Becks, 12 December 2010.

So there you have it, cake continues to dominate the bbcgoodfood.com charts. We raise our pinkies and chink our teacups to that, and to you, for making sure there'll be plenty more cake coming out of the test kitchen next year.

What were your favourite recipes on the the website this year? And what would you like to see more or less of in 2011?

Open Quote4 of my all time favorites from the site are: Friday-night fish pie (I make this all the time, it's practically the only fish dish my family will eat happily), The thai green chicken curry from the olive magazine (super-quick, super delicious),Cherry & coconut Florentines (a great Christmas present idea) and the Simple squash risotto (a lovely winter/autumn supper) The site has been such an inspiration I'm now receiving the Good Food Magazine as well!

Open QuoteI'll second the lemon drizzle cake, which is in my own top ten of site favourites, along with quick sausage bolognese and no-fuss shepherd's pie, blueberry and white choc muffins, self-saucing jaffa pudding and plum and almond pudding. All maximum taste for minimum effort and child-friendly. I love this site (and the e-newsletter for ideas each week) and it's now always my first port of call for simple recipes that work every time. Thank you!

Open QuoteMy own particular favourite (Greek lamb with orzo) isn't in the top 10 but no matter. I love my Good Food magazine and when I've finished with it, I pass it on to an elderly neighbour because I know that I can (usually) find the recipes that have inspired me from the mag on the site anyway.

Open QuoteI am so upset that "mustard stuffed chicken" didn't make it into the running. This is a recipe that is the perfect go to meal. It is so simple and has so much opportunity for making it your own personal dish. Look out next year I think it will be in the running if more people try it. :)

I don't get enough time to try al lot of the recipes but i've tried a few and mostly they are very good.I print out the ones i like and put them in a plastic wallet and store them in an A4 binder so when i'm stuck for something or fancy trying something different i've some ideas to hand. This site is a must for inspiration!

Open QuoteI don't often make desserts so haven't attempted a lot of the top 10, though I might give some on the list a go in 2011. The chilli is one of my fool-proof recipes. I also love the pan-fried chicken with mushroom sauce (so indulgent, so delicious!), baked raspberry cheesecake, butternut squash and sage risotto, and salt and pepper squid. I'm hungry now...

Open QuoteI agree with the Chicken Cacciatore too, I have passed that recipe on to so many people, credit to Good Food of course! One of my other favourites, Barney's Rasperry Bakewell cake didn't make the top 10 though, but there are so many gorgeous recipes on this site - long may it continue!

Open QuoteNope. Why didn't Mustard Stuffed Chicken get a mention??? http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4814/mustardstuffed-chicken I must've made this a dozen of times, and (apart from the washing-up) I hate to have to peel the guests' socks off the ceiling, it astonished them so much. ("Blew my b***dy socks off, mate!) Plus, it's a breeze to make. (Layered a bit o' frozen spinach in 'twixt the cheeses. Seems the bird I was using at the time had rather ample breasts and could accomodate a bit more..(Oh, stoppit, Andy) (Oh, the Chilli was up there in the Gods as well, close, but no cigar (this thyme) 8/10 for that, mustard chicken 9/10.)

Open QuoteElk. Believe me, you'd crawl 10 kM naked over broken glass in -30 degrees just to slaver at the window where we're cooking it. Best recipe? http://www.ehow.com/how_5444051_cook-elk-meat-crockpot.html. Omit the wine., it's not necessary. Now how to crawl back? Eat Lutefisk*, also traditional Scandinavian food. You'll be glad you left your clothes at home, believe me... *Sorstromming is better, if your shed's warm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ2yG1kSkkk

Open QuoteMy 2 favourite recipes don't figure in the Top 10 either. Both are so easy to make and taste absolutely scrumptious. Easy Chicken Tagine - one of our monthly regulars eaten with spicey couscous. And No Cook Chocolate Tart - initially made this for Christmas Day dessert last year. So rich and wickedly indulgent and can be made ahead. Top marks from me for both these recipes.

Open QuoteI love the lemon drizzle cake (even made it in individual loaf tins recently, so cute!). I use the website several times a week, and I buy Good Food, Delicious and Olive too. I'm a vegetarian, so my top recipes are obviously veggie, but my favourites are: Red onion and rosemary focaccia The butternut squash soup with chilli and creme fraiche Lemon drizzle loaf Golden vegetable sheperds pie Barley, squash and asparagus salad (this really is super, and very adaptable, I make it all year round to take to work for lunch) Spinach and sun blush tomato filo tart I've printed out many more, I'm keen to try the festive squash jalousie recipe and tomorrow I am making the malteser cheesecake recipe from the January 2011 Good Food magazine, can't wait!

Open QuoteChocolate, ah yes , the new nut free "nutella" sold in Holland & Barrett is great (and nutfree) on bread, but try it in a tortilla and then toast it. Theres a brand in Universities called Wrapid (www.wrapid.com) that does a great chocolate wrap, served hot...chocolate I guess with anything, but flatbreads make perfect sense covered in a chocolate spread...
