Man v Food

Posted at , 06 July 2010 by Janine Ratcliffe - Food editor, olive magazine

A wise man once said: 'Never eat anything bigger than your own head'. It's a phrase that often springs to mind when watching Man v Food, Good Food Channel's latest US import.

The premise of the show is simple. Each week presenter Adam Richman explores a different city and the food it's famous for. At the end of the show he undertakes an eating challenge which tests either his stomach capacity (the six-pound, baby-sized burrito in Las Vegas's Nascar café, say) or his heat tolerance (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse burger with its blistering mix of naga, Serrano, jalapeno and habanero chillies).

It's not the competitive eating that keeps me watching though. It's all the other places he visits, restaurants that have been around for decades with a fanatical following for the one thing they do really well (melt-in-the mouth sticky ribs, crisp fried chicken, stacked deli sandwiches). So next time I'm in Chicago, I'm off to Lucky's for a Pastrami & cheese (the secret is the fries go inside).

Does Man v Food make you hungry or leave you feeling nauseous? Do you have a favourite restaurant that's famous for doing one thing really well? Tell us about it!

Open QuoteI honestly feel I haven't lived after reading about that burger. How about a recipe for a burger with chillies in an interesting way (eg not slathered with chilli con carne)?

Open QuoteI love a good kick of chilli and my tolerance is pretty high - but I don't really want to be in pain when I eat. I once had a Thai jungle curry that was so hot it almost induced a panic attack - I couldn't breathe properly, my ears were burning and I had to go outside and calm down for 10 minutes!

Open QuoteI love this programme, and the presenter is great. I am amazed that he isn't the size of a house, considering the kinds of food he tries (OK, he' a bit on the chunky side, but certainly wouldn't describe him as fat). I couldn't help wondering how often he vomits the moment the cameras stop filming, and also reckon that his stomach lining must be ripped to shreds with the large amount of extra super spicy food he eats in the challenges (to the point that he has tears flooding down his face!). Respect to him for being so brave - in a odd kind of way!
