Desktop dining

Getting crumbs stuck in your keyboard might not sound cool, but it seems to be one of Britain's biggest trends, with one in five UK employees eating lunch at their desk every day. It's easily done, but having had a couple of brighter spring days, I noticed the huge difference sitting outside in the sunshine made.

Unlike my sister I'm no scientist, but having the chance to socialise and eat feels like it activates a different part of your brain, and I definitely returned to work feeling fresher-headed and more inspired, which can't be a bad thing, can it?

Open quotationEating in a state of isolation just isn't giving lunch the respect it deservesClose quotation

Eating in a state of isolation - just you, your laptop and a soggy sandwich - just isn't giving lunch the respect it deserves. When I eat in a stressed or absent-minded state I'm less likely to properly taste my food, and to know when to stop. And if you're eating at your desk, everyone will continue to forward on calls or ask you impromptu questions, so you're forced to choose between talking with your mouth full or unsettling your workmates with a drawn-out silence.

I know most people's work is pressured, but even taking out 15 minutes can give your mind a chance to switch off, and your body some time to digest. Most people just can't carry on concentrating with the same brainpower for eight hours a day anyway, so you may well be losing less working time than you think.

Depending on what you're eating (egg sandwich anyone?) your boss really might prefer you to take your lunch elsewhere, and that's without mentioning the food noise pollution. Just hope your desk neighbour doesn't have a penchant for crunchy apples or pickled onion Monster Munch.

On the upside, the average desk is 400 times more contaminated than a toilet seat, so you're quite likely to regain some of those missed hours with an extra couple of sick days anyway - and if that's not enough to put you off, I don't know what is.

Do you eat lunch at your desk?

Open QuoteNope, I hate eating lunch at my desk. I definitely need to get away, have a chat and properly rest my brain. I also hate filthy desks, keyboards full of crumbs and sticky mice which eating at your desk every day inevitably leads to! Also, as you mention, desks are far from hygienic dining tables!!

Open QuoteI don't really have a choice about where i eat lunch, my office does not provide us with anywhere to eat lunch other than our desks. I do get out for a quick 15 minute walk to the shops, so that's something at least.

Open QuoteThere is nothing more revolting than sitting at someone else's computer only to discover it's got crumbs wedged in the keyboard. I vote for lunch out.

Open Quote8 hours? More like 18 for me. I'm possibly the worst culprit - can eat all 3 meals at the desk answering emails/ tweets or writing invoices/ searching for recipes in between bites. Hmm - maybe I should slow down a bit?

Open QuoteA day or two off is called for, I think, James! I guiltily admit to eating my lunch at my desk as I'm reading this! But I keep my desk spotlessly clean, never eat anything crumb-y over my keyboard. And I occasionally do the odd bit of work there too... ;-)

Open QuoteI'm guilty too I'm afraid! But I don't answer my phone and normally read the paper or my book so tend not to get bothered. No where really around here to go, especially in winter. Do normally get some fresh air for at least 10 minutes tho unless it's completely chucking it down!

Open QuoteI wouldn't want to eat at my desk, even though now I don't work. I once had a boss who took the view that if you are in the building you are on duty, so I made a point of leaving the building for a whole hour even it was chucking it down and freezing cold. Hubby eats at his desk, at home after a full day's work, then he complains that his office, this is the one at home, isn't clean!

Open QuoteI eat my desk an unfortunate 4 days a week, only fridays do I have the luxury of a half day, and hence a full lunch! However, I do always spend 20 mins of my 30 walking to the shop and back, can't understand why my colleagues always remain inside the stuffy office! Maybe I should request some picnic benches outside - might mean I save 20 mins a year on dismantling my keyboard after getting something stuck underneath the space bar!

Open QuoteI had to use the office of a colleague the other week and along with his office came his computer... oh the horror that met me! I am usually not very easily put off by filthy things, but this man's keyboard had me wanting to scrub my hands with a steel brush under boiling hot water for days. It was like there was a kind of sticky, oily, dirty layer of dirt on all the keys and I can still feel a chill down my spine when I think about it. I was grossed out to the point where I had to go get a wet paper towel, some soap and scrub-scrub away! He has not thanked me for cleaning his keyboard, but I hope he noticed it!
