Tall, dark and have some

Posted at , 16 March 2010 by Andrea McGinniss - Editor, bbcgoodfood.com

If I had a pint for every time someone spelt my surname 'as in the drink' I'd open my own brewery. Guinness has been both the bane, and one of the most brilliant, things in my life.

Bane because it's given me headaches, made me poorer, distracted me from more cerebral activities. I certainly haven't read as many books as I should have. And I'm sure I should have spent at least half of that time 'in the gym' or somewhere equally 'beneficial' (ie dull). But bejaysus it's been fun.

Ever since I could spell my name I have felt a connection to it. Tall, dark and mysterious, if it were a man I'd want to marry it. One pint in a divey Irish bar in Melbourne and I was hooked. Not to the actual drink, but to the nostalgia, romance and rebellion it represented.

A couple of years later and I was living in the West of Ireland. And the Guinness was good. I laughed, cried, put the world to rights, hooked up, broke up and broke glasses because of it. Fifteen years later, and I continue to do so, albeit at a far gentler pace.

True it doesn't travel well. True it's soupier and less lovingly poured in London. But when I need to take comfort from the crowds and the cranes, or have a crisis to talk out, going for a cocktail or coffee simply can't compete. It's just a shame they can't spell it correctly.

What food or drink gives you comfort?

Open QuoteI think anything with mashed potato (and preferably gravy) is comforting for me. Reminds me of being a child and of warm cosy nights in with no worries. It has to be smooth mash though, no lumps or then it's more like school dinners which is not comforting but scary!
