Sweets for my sweets

Posted at , 15 February 2010 by Emily Boyce - Sub-editor, bbcgoodfood.com

Earlier today we asked our Facebook fans to share their favourite pancake toppings. Suggestions included peanut butter spread on to one pancake, Nutella on another, sandwiched together (what we might call 'The Elvis'), plus several sophisticated advocates of a sprinkling of cinnamon - with vanilla and maple syrup, or apple and raisins.

The delicious parcel of flambéed rum, banana, maple syrup and raisins I enjoyed rather too regularly at a pancake house in Oxford sticks in my mind, but I think the classic lemon and sugar is hard to beat. In France, I often go for a crêpe au sucre, with buttery melted sugar oozing out from a thin, lacy pancake...

But the question is, will you be feasting solely on sweet pancakes tomorrow night? I can't imagine going to the effort of cooking a separate main course to precede the pancake extravaganza, but going straight for pudding feels far too naughty. I'll always have a few savoury pancakes - with cheese and tomato, mushrooms, spinach and ricotta - before I feel justified in moving on to the chocolate sauce, but an office straw poll reveals many shun the savouries altogether.

What's your favourite pancake topping, sweet or savoury? And how many pancakes is too many? Personally I can get through at least five savoury and five sweet before admitting defeat - could you match my pancake-eating prowess?

Open QuoteWe're starting out with smoked salmon, then having pancakes, bacon and maple syrup. And none of those namby-pamby flat euro-cakes, either. Ours are going to be big, fluffy pillows of awesomeness.

Open QuoteDefo savoury - my favourite combo is red pesto, Gubbeen cheese, ham and spinach, inspired by the crepes i used to feast on at the Temple Bar Market in Dublin. Followed maybe my the old lemon juice and sugar combo for pud. Bring it on!
