Look back with hunger

Posted at , 12 October 2009 by Andrea McGinniss - Editor, bbcgoodfood.com

It's Chocolate Week , when we celebrate all things smooth and sweet and indulgent and good, and, we presume, still available to buy. But what about the less celebrated chocolates and desserts which have gone, along with video recorders and Rubik's Cubes, into the big furry box marked 'nostalgic' in the sky?

Last week I returned from a few weeks in Australia with the compulsory box of choccies for the office. Last time no one appreciated the Cherry Ripes nearly as much as I did (not mentioning any names, Emily) so I bought a bumper box of Toffifees from Dubai airport instead.

It was a good decision. Eyes misted up, the hankies (almost) came out; I hadn't experienced this level of nostalgia since hearing A-ha were getting back together. My workmates told me how much they loved and missed the near-extinct Toffifee eating experience, and gobbled them up in one go, apart from the 'last one' which I couldn't foist on anyone (English etiquette lives on!). The half-empty packet of Hobnobs up the other end of the desk looked on jealously.

The return of the Wispa bar a couple of years ago was greeted with the kind of hysteria Robbie Williams could only dream of. Other companies are recognising the comfort familiar favourites can provide with Bird's Eye today re-releasing much-loved 80s dessert Supermousse, following on from the return of the enigmatic Arctic Roll last year.

So what other favourite foodstuff would you like to see back on the shelves? Or are there any you'd like to see the back of?

Open QuoteHave to say the comment on Toffifee being 'near extinct' is pretty baffling to me, seeing as there's a few places you can easily get them in the UK like Poundland, Netto, Lidl (I think) so you just have to know where to look. Anyway, I always loved the strawberry Onken Fromage Frais when I was little & am always disappointed when I notice it isn't there anymore when I go in a supermarket.

Open QuoteLove to be able to buy a Cabana bar again. It was a chocolate bar with cherries and coconut, sounds bit weird but it tasted vaguely tropical. think it was around in the Eighties. Have to confess to a weakness for Caramac bars too. Don't often see them, but there's something about them that hits the spot!

Open QuoteI remember the 'Secret' bars too. They were very 'posh' in the eyes of a child and they had a piece of cardboard underneath the bar to stop it breaking into pieces. I think they were 50 irish pence. They were also super expensensive at a time when 10p bags of sweets and frosties got you more for your pocket money. Even if the frosties did cut the mouth off you..

Open QuoteMmmmm the memories! You can still get Toffifee round here (NW London) I am sure, places like Wilkos. The mention of Frosties made my mouth water - but it has to be the Kola ones, not the fruit. Had some recently when the other half found a shop selling them and bought me a load as he knew I loved them in school. Secret bars were gorgeous! I'd love to try them again now and see if I still like them as much - I don't know what it is, but often things are either not as good as they were first time round, or as 'grown ups' we just see them differently than we once did. Dimes are still around - but the name is now Daim. As for pickled onion monster munch - had some the other day and every bit as eye-wateringly tangy and gorgeous as ever- they've also made them bigger again, just how we remember them :)

Open QuoteCreamola foam... definitely brings back childhood memories. We weren't allowed it as it was basically sugar and flavourings that you mixed with water and by some magic it got frothy and fizzy so I used to go into my next door neighbour for my fix. I think you could only get it in Scotland which could be why no-one remembers it.
